The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 has struck on the coast of central Peru.

The quake was recorded at 11 minutes after midnight local time, nine miles from the city of Ica, which was badly damaged by a major 8.0 earthquake in August 2007 and also suffered damage in a quake last October.

The number of injured treated by local hospitals and clinics totals 60," regional president Alonso Navarro told local radio after a tour of the area.

The injuries included broken bones, concussion and cuts caused by falling objects, officials said. None of the injuries is considered life-threatening.

The shaking was felt as far away as Lima.
