Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on ALT 105.7 and iHeartRadio 12/28/19 - CES 2020 Preview

Rick is joined by Axel this week to talk about what they are looking forward to at CES 2020.

Have a listen:

Here's what they discussed:

1. Alexa And Google Assistant Devices and Companion Devices

Both Amazon's Alexa-powered Echo devices and Google's own devices powered by the Google Assistant had a major presence at CES 2019. But there were also plenty of third-party devices on display at the show that use one (or both) of the voice-activated smart assistants built in. You can expect CES 2020 to be no different, with interest in assistant devices showing no signs of waning. In particular, a greater number of smart assistant devices featuring displays—akin to the Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub—is a pretty sure bet for the conference.

2. 5G

5G For the Mainstream: While 2020 still won’t bring consumers a 5G iPhone, that doesn’t mean that 5G won’t be a super hot topic at CES (and at Mobile World Congress in February). 2019 was a big year for 5G with Chipmakers including Qualcomm and Huawei actively announcing new platforms and with carriers around the world rolling out 5G networks including a recent T-Mobile launch in the U.S. that brought 5G to an estimated 200 Million Americans. With these networks, came new devices from a number of handset makers, most notably Samsung releasing its Note 10 5G. I believe we will be seeing a whole lot of new 5G devices at CES 2020 as the technology is now becoming more mainstream across Asia, Europe and the U.S. I also expect 5G to be a sub headline for each of the other four big trends that I’m predicting for CES 2020 as faster devices, greater data volumes and powerful content plays are all enabled by 5G.

3. Vehicles

Connected and Autonomous Vehicles: The floor of CES can look and feel a bit like the Detroit Auto Show as the next wave of vehicle technology has been a hot CES topic for more than a decade and this has been turbo charged as autonomous and electric cars have gained massive momentum and we cruise toward level 4 autonomous vehicles becoming mainstream (so many car puns).

The vehicles themselves will be on display, and no doubt there will be some cool concept vehicles full of futuristic technology. However, I think the headlines be focused on new and innovative technology announcements from chipmakers and OEMs, which will power this evolution of self-driving and smart cities powered by the massive big data created by vehicles and their drivers. Over the next few years, we will quietly see vehicle data become a bigger part of a new economy that will (with 5G) power the realization of smart cities.

4. Streaming and more streaming

Streaming Wars Pushes Content Revolution: While not a gadget at all, the past year has been an endless bout of the biggest tech giants swinging their content wares at one another as Netflix saw not only Amazon, but Apple and Disney make massive entrances into the streaming content wars. As Devices may serve as the short-term cool factor at events like CES, ultimately it is what we do on those devices that will dictate their success.

Over the next year, the packaging of devices and streaming may start to feel a little bit like the packaging of windows on the PC. Apple flashed this craze with its inclusion of Apple TV Plus with the iPhone 11. Verizon has offered Disney+ free to new subscribers and T-Mobile has done this for its customers with Netflix.

5. Apple Returns

Apple makes a return to CES

6. Monitors and Displays

Is curved for you?

7. Kitchen smart gadgets and appliances.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on ALT 105.7 and iHeartRadio 11/15/19 - Tom Schram, Asheville Art Museum

Tom Schram, Asheville Art Museum, Preparator and Asst. Registrar

What goes on behind the scenes at a museum when it comes to technology? How are museum pieces stored? Is there an optimal temperature of condition for works of art? What is a museum preparator?

We cover that and a ton more as Tom Schram, Preparator and Asst. Registrar of the brand new Asheville Art Museum, joins Rick for the entire segment this week.

Rick was onsite in Asheville, NC, this week, for the opening.

Have a listen:

The $24 million, state-of-the-art facility covers 54,000 square feet and adds 70 percent more Collection gallery space. For the first time in the Museum’s history, it has the capacity to host major traveling exhibitions from nationally recognized museums. The expansion increases its physical space and dramatically increases its role as a community center, educational resource, economic engine for WNC, and cultural concierge for the region’s residents and visitors.

Working with local general contractor Beverly-Grant, local architecture firm ARCA Design, and New York-based architectural firm Ennead Architects, the project consisted of three main components:

-The historic preservation of the Museum’s current North Wing (formerly the 1926 Pack Library) to house the new John & Robyn Horn Education Center and Frances Mulhall Achilles Art Library.
-Renovation and new construction of the East Wing including two special exhibition halls (Appleby Foundation Hall and Explore Asheville Hall) and more Collection storage.
-Entirely new construction of the West Wing with a stunning glass façade.

Features of the new Museum:

A rooftop sculpture terrace and Perspective Café offer gorgeous mountain views.
The Oculus, a 15-foot viewing window in the SECU Collection Hall affords unmatched immersive city views and a place for reflection.
Public art installations and programming on the Plaza.
Wells Fargo ArtPLAYce, a hands-on creative space for people of all ages.
The Windgate Foundation Atrium, a light-filled place to take in large-scale works of art.
SECU Collection Hall’s 10 new galleries

“The new Asheville Art Museum is a warm and welcoming space on a personal level,” says Executive Director Pamela L. Myers.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on ALT 105.7 and iHeartRadio 9/13/19 - Guy Harvey of Guy Harvey Apparel

A special episode of LimpertTech this week as Rick is joined by Guy Harvey of Guy Harvey Apparel for the entire segment.

Have a listen:

Guy Harvey of www.GuyHarvey.com.

Rick and Guy talk about his background and what’s coming in 2020. Harvey’s iconic ocean-inspired artwork which serves as the backdrop for the Spring 2020 launch. The Spring 2020 collection focuses on Guy’s original artwork showcased on versatile and durable clothing designed to perform from the day’s first cast, to the night’s last catch. This collection of wearable works of art feature high performance fishing apparel as well as casual lifestyle pieces. It includes tees, shorts, head wear, sportswear, swim, and layering pieces. Customers will also find boating and coastal casual footwear including sandals, boat shoes and casual canvas shoes.

“We are very excited about our new sportfishing lifestyle apparel and footwear collection,” said Dr. Harvey. “Through our diverse partnerships, we have created high-quality, functional, fashionable sportfishing apparel and footwear that fit every season and is designed especially for today’s active lifestyle.”

As with all Guy Harvey apparel and merchandise, a portion of proceeds from sales support scientific research and educational initiatives through the non-profit Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF).

The Guy Harvey story begins on Jamaica’s south coast where a young boy and his parents enjoyed many hours fishing and diving, as well as beach excursions with the entire family. Growing up in this idyllic setting, this boy knew that his life would forever be focused on the ocean and all its offerings.

Today this young boy is the man we know as Guy Harvey—the embodiment of everything having to do with the water. He is a unique blend of artist, conservationist, diver, angler, scientist and explorer, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the ocean.

A 10th generation Jamaican of English heritage, his passion for marine life started to grow from that tranquil childhood backdrop and he began drawing pictures of the many different fish he observed. From his early inspirations, Guy’s natural gift to recreate the underwater realm has propelled him from Professor of Marine Biology to Wildlife Artist and Photographer.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on ALT 105.7 and iHeartRadio 8/30/19 - Tips for Buying a Budget Laptop

If money is a concern when looking to purchase a new laptop, consider these factors in this order of importance:

We are talking maybe $250-500.

Have a listen:

Full-HD (1920 x 1080) Screen: Most budget laptops are saddled with low-res, 1366 x 768 displays that allow you to fit a lot of text on the screen at once. If you can find a laptop with a screen that has a 1920 x 1080 resolution, you'll be able to see more of your favorite web pages, emails, social media feeds and documents, without scrolling. You'll also get much sharper images and videos.

SSD or eMMC Memory: Most sub-$500 laptops use mechanical hard drives, but if you can get one with a solid-state drive or eMMC storage, another form of solid-state memory, you'll speed up your  boot and application open times.

Good build quality: If you see a laptop with a soft-touch finish or real aluminum on any of its surfaces ― especially the deck and lid ―that's a sign of good design. However, in this price range, you'll likely have to settle for plastic.

Pick the right CPU: A Core i3 processor is pretty good for this price range. Intel Pentium and Celeron CPUs are serviceable, but not particularly speedy. A Chromebook generally requires less processing power than a Windows machine.

Optical Media: If you need to use CDs or DVDs, we've even found a couple of laptops with DVD drives that won't break the bank.
Your buying decision may come down to whether you need a full-fledged PC, or would prefer the simplicity of a Chromebook.

You'll want a Windows 10-based machine if there are applications  you depend upon, such as Adobe or Microsoft's suites of apps. Yes, Chrome OS machines can run the Android versions of those apps with Google Play emulation, but those apps are often incomplete, and give you a bare minimum when it comes to features.

Chromebooks will be best, though, if you live inside the Chrome browser, and prefer a system that takes care of itself. With a Chromebook, you'll never need antivirus software, and system updates are automatically performed. Chromebooks are also more web-dependent, as offline modes are still not as widely available.
