Yale University to take over New Haven Tennis Event for One Year

The New Haven ATP and WTA events in August, unable to lock down a major title sponsor for 2011 and beyond, now will have Yale University stepping in to lead a "bridge" sponsorship for next years  tournament, set for Aug. 22-28 at the Connecticut Tennis Center.

The New Haven Register first reported the bridge sponsorship plan.

Yale president Rick Levin, along with New Haven mayor John DeStafano, tournament chairman Butch Buchholz and tournament director Anne Worcester, will conduct a new conference to announce the details.

While the fact that the tournament will continue is good news -- both the men's and women's events are listed on the respective 2011 calendars of the ATP and WTA Tours -- Worcester has to be disappointed that the event was unable to land a title sponsor. She spent this year's Pilot Pen Tennis tournament entertaining as many as nine different companies that were interested in taking the place of the Pilot Pen.

Six of those companies were "solid prospects," according to Worcester. Two of those prospects were financial services companies, one was an international investment company, two others were insurance companies -- including one located in the state -- and one was a consumer goods product company.

A recent cause for optimism had to come from the fact that tournaments in both Los Angeles and San Diego had signed major title sponsors for their events this year.

This is good news for tennis fans and the U.S. Open Series.  This event needs to continue and it's great it is a combined men's and women's showcase leading right into the U.S. Open.

Yale has the money to sponsor this event, but let's hope a solid company steps up and puts their name on this event.

ATP Tennis Match of the Week: Federer vs. Djokovic

This should be great.  Federer vs. Djokovic in the semis of the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Set your DVR, get up early or whatever for this one.

Fed holds the advantage 10-6 in head-tohead meetings, but Novak won the last meeting at the U.S. Open a little over a month ago.

They have never played in Asia before, so it should be a treat for the fans in China that will show up.  Both players have reached the semis fairly easily,

Prediction:  Federer gets revenge from his loss in New York and takes Novak out 7-5, 7-6.

Federer Goes "Between the Legs"...Again

Roger Federer did it again.  Another between the legs shot for a winner.

This time against John Isner in the second round in Shanghai.  Isner had to know it was coming back, but the expression on his face said he was surprised and amazed at the same time.

The players now are on tot Fed.  They have to be ready for this shot to come back.  The thing is, fed is not only trying to get the ball back in play, he sees himself hitting a winner with it.

ATP Match of the Week: Isner vs. Djokovic

Hard to believe these two have only played once and that was in Davis Cup.  They will meet tomorrow in the semi's of the China Open.  Is it just me or does it look extremely smoggy in China during the tennis coverage?

Isner has appeared to regain the form he had in the summer before his ankle injury.  He is serving big and playing with a lot of confidence.  He should finish the year in the top-20 and could approach the #10 mark with a real strong finish to the season.

Djokovic's road to the semi's was pretty easy He defeated a wildcard in Gong, had a walkover win over Mardy Fish before beating Simon in straight sets.  Novak knows Isner is a formidable foe and won't take him lightly.

Prediction:  Isner 7-6 in the 3rd set.
