Isner Loses in Late Night/Early Morning at U.S. Open

The match ended at 2:26 in the morning and again John Isner lost a 5-setter.

It was the latest finish at the U.S. Open, as Philipp Kohlscreiber of Germany eliminated John Isner of the United States 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at 2:26 a.m. local time Monday to reach the fourth round.

In order to be a top player, experts say you have to win these five set matches at Slams.  Kohlscreiber won his sixth consecutive five-setter. No. 9 Isner, the highest-seeded American man, dropped his fourth in a row.

Against Kohlschreiber, Isner hit 22 aces, but he lost all three break points he faced. He only was able to break the German twice in 11 chances.

Isner not only lost the match, but lost his cool as well.  That's not hard to do when you playing this late, and the match is so important.  Also, the bad line-calling didn't help the situation.

A disappointing result for Isner, who had other similar results in the majors this year.  He needs to improve on this in 2013.

The New #1 American in Tennis

John Isner

Regardless of how he does today against Juan Monaco in Houston, John Isner will be ranked No. 9 in the world on monday morning and will replace Mardy Fish as the top-ranked American.

I can't say I saw this coming when John broke in a few years ago, but I'm happy for him and think he still has a tremendous upside.
