Wireless Wednesday for 10/2/13: With Mitch Evans - Current Tech Trends

A lot of information this week.

TOPICS - Rick and Mitch talk about whether he and Randi should buy an iPad Mini to replace his older iPad and they look at some tech trends on the horizon.... and the App of the week

1.  Mitch and Randi have an original iPad.  They need to replace it, should they get another iPad, iPad mini or what?

_____________________________________________________________________
**Tech trends to look for for 2013, 2014 and beyond

2.   Free Wi-Fi for everyone

Towns are cities are slowly embracing this initiative.  Free Wi-Fi is popping up in cities all over the country. Soon there will be free universal Wi-Fi everywhere
http://www.techguysmartbuy.com/2013/09/nyc-to-free-wi-fi-by-december-in-select-areas.html

3. Augmented Reality

3D, but so much more
CrowdOptic is a company on the forefront of Augmented Reality and focus-based analytics
Augmented Reality is the interaction of superimposed graphics, audio and other enhancements over a real-world environment displayed in real-time. A key challenge in cyber-physical systems is that users often can’t see the cyber information they need in the real-world setting. For example, as construction workers walk around a site, they can’t see the 3D building plan for the project directly overlaid on the walls in front of them to determine if they are built as planned. Augmented reality technologies enable these workers to reduce costly mistakes by visualizing what they are building atop what actually exists in the physical world. Retailers are currently experimenting with augmented reality to get more customers into the stores by allowing shoppers to ‘see’ the clothes on them without having to actually try them on. Some of these apps are a bit gimmicky now, but have the potential to change how we shop, train for new skills, game, build, and make other important decisions.

4.  Crowdsourcing and Crowdfunding campaigns will get more popular

More and more people, organizations, bands, tv and movie producers are putting their ideas up on sites like Kickstarter or Indiegogo or creating their own websites to get money to produce their projects.
What's to say cities or schools can't start their own campaigns for various things.
It's a new way of fundraising.

5.   5G

The G stands for Generation, thus typically the speed of data transmission over wireless networks increases with each generation. U.S. wireless providers are far into the process of converting their networks from 3G to 4G, as are the device makers (Apple's iPhone 5 was its first 4G smartphone). Recently two competing 4G platforms were in use by various wireless telecom companies. For many reasons, LTE (long-term evolution) won out over WiMAX for North American cellular phone markets in 2012, thus moving all of us closer to a common broadband platform for the world. You can expect to see 5G roll out within the next few years.

Wireless Wednesday for 9/25/13: With Mitch Evans - Accessories for the New iPhones

* TOPICS - The new iPhones went on sale last Friday... Rick and Mitch take a look at some of the new accessories available  and the "App of the Month"

1.  Cases Made By Apple
5C - A colorful mesh-style plastic case. This costs $29 and comes in the same five colors as the phone itself, so you can either match the phone or mix it up with a secondary color. There's also a black option if you want to tone things down a bit

5S- Made of leather on the outside and protective microfiber on the inside, and come in softer colors like yellow, peach, etc  for $49

2.   Book Book iPhone Wallet Case $59
It's a case, it's a wallet  -  all in one
It’s the best implementation of a wallet/case combination I have seen, especially now that it has a camera hole for the iPhone 5 model. While there are many case/wallet combos on the market, and I have tried quite a few, the BookBook remains my favorite because it’s rugged, stylish and has a place to carry cash.

3.    Pivot Power Mini Outlet Adapter  -  $24.99

A wall adapter with a plug for everything.
Only the newest homes these days come with built-in USB adapters in the wall. Our outlets simply weren’t designed for the type of power-hungry lives we all lead today. (Our descendants will wonder how we lived.) Enter this handy little adapter that doubles the plugs of any outlet it encounters and adds two USB ports. Great for an office, bedroom, kitchen or for throwing in your travel bag.

4.  PhotoJoJo iPhone Lenses  $20-$50
www.photojojo.com

PhotoJoJo Fisheye, Telephoto, Wide Angle and Macro Lenses are like pro-lenses for your phone!

Each is crafted out of solid aluminum and outfitted with thick, high-clarity glass. They’ve been factory tested by hand and inspected to ensure the utmost optical perfection.
How it works: each set comes with adhesive removable metal rings. The ring sticks to the back of your phone, and the Photojojo Lens attaches magnetically. Snap it on and off in an instant!

We've also included two extra-strong rings specially designed for the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5 (they stick to glass and won't block the flash or back mic).

5.   The Armpocket  - for Fitness Buffs  $29.95
www.armpocket.com
You can comfortably and confidently carry your essentials, including your phone and case. Multiple inside compartments guard your valuables and a low-profile audio port lets you easily and securely connect your headphones. Great for the gym, school, shopping or traveling — anytime you need a dry, hands-free, secure and comfy carrying solution.

This model features two head-phone outlets, one on the bottom left and one on the bottom right, compatible with all phones including iPhone 5/5S/5C.

*Tennis Technology*

1. Hawk-Eye - Technology

Tennis' instant replay challenges.  Very accurate.
Players get 3 challenges per set -  Additional challenges if they are right
Replays are shown on big video screens on the court  and fans get into it

2.  Racquets

Not sure how much more racquets can change, but they have.
They continue to get lighter.
Wilson is making an effort use fewer cross strings - that equals more spin.
So far the results have been positive.

3.  Strings

Big changes have occured in strings over the last 5-7 years.  String technology has evolved more than anything.

It has changed in the past decade because strings made of polyester blends can create more topspin, allowing players to swing harder, keep the ball in the court and extend rallies.

“For every 100 r.p.m.’s of topspin you can put on the ball, you can reduce the flight distance by 6 to 12 inches,”
The game has changes and the pro have all gone to the new strings.

4.  Wilson's High Tech Innovation Center in Chicago

The Innovation Center, a nondescript one-story brick building located a few blocks from O’Hare Airport, houses the gadgets and gizmos, and the brainpower that develops Wilson’s rackets. This year, the Innovation Center added a Doppler radar device called the TrackMan, which was connected to a small practice court to measure the speed, flight pattern and revolutions per minute of a ball when struck by a player. The tests confirmed that the string pattern was the key variable affecting spin, with other tweaks to the racket frame necessary to fully enhance the effect.
