Carson Palmer Won't Play for Bengals and Has $80 Million in the Bank

Carson Palmer says he would rather retire than return to the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I have $80 million in the bank,” the Cincinnati television station cited Palmer as saying in a report on its website. “I don’t have to play football for money. I’ll play it for the love of the game but that would have to be elsewhere.”

The Bengals may seek to trade Palmer rather than let him retire, a report said.

The 31-year-old Palmer has been a Bengal since being chosen by Cincinnati with the first overall pick in the 2003 National Football League draft.

Palmer is frustrated with the direction of the team and owner Mike Brown.  The Bengals went 4-12 last season.

i have met carson palmer. i like him. he seems like an honest forthright guy. i dont think he is the type of person who says things just to say them. i think he is dead serious and will not continue to play in cincinnati. as much as he is upset with the bengals, i think he is more upset with the fans. he brought the bengals to the playoffs twice, the only two times in twenty years. he played hurt, hes come back from horrendous injuries. in return, fans threw garbage on his lawn. i think he feels betrayed and unappreciated and i think he is genuinely concerned for his family. i dont think hes thin skinned; i think he doesnt want his wife and young family subjected to this sort of abuse. if he was single, i think h e could make peace with mike brown and marvin lewis. ocho and t.o wont be a problem because theyre on their way out.. but he doesnt want to live with fans harassing his family and he doesnt want to be looking over his shoulder all the time. i believe him when he says he wants out. this isnt about money, or coaching philosophy or even a lousy owner; this is about protecting his young family and being a good husband and father. knowing carson, thats something he values more than anything, including a superbowl. so i really think hes gone, and unless hes traded, i think hell retire..
