Beryl Barrels to U.S. Coast

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Beryl was technically still considered a “subtropical storm,” but the system is expected to bring winds and rain to the area regardless of its official classification.

Tropical storm conditions — meaning maximum sustained winds of 45 mph — could reach the coast as early as Saturday night. Three to six inches of rain are forecast for the area. Some coastal flooding is forecast, as the rain could cause high tides.

As of 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Beryl was still centered about 220 miles east-southeast of Charleston, S.C. It had become stronger, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. It was moving southwest at 6 mph, with its center expected to be near the coast by late Sunday.

Beryl could dump heavy rain in the coastal counties of Georgia, and will bring a chance of rain to metro Atlanta by the end of the holiday weekend.

Until then, metro Atlantans can expect hot and dry weather on Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon highs climbing to within a degree or two of the 94-degree record set in 1936.

Quarters Gives us "Big" Match on Men's Side at NCAA Tennis

Steve Johnson is looking for his 70th straight win and Alex Domijan of Virginia is looking to pull an upset.

These two big, strong players will take the court in what should be an interesting match with lots of winners being hit.

Domijan is tall and has a big game.  He will serve, he will crack forehands.  Johnson will try to do what he always does and just win.

Hot temps expected today in Athens and big hitting in this men's match.

Airplane Door Lands on Golf Course

Federal aviation authorities are investigating how a private jet's main cabin door landed on a fairway at a South Florida golf course.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that the Canadair CL60's door landed Wednesday afternoon on the 16th fairway of the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa's golf course in Hallandale Beach.

No injuries were reported.

The jet had just taken off from the Opa-Locka Executive Airport and was headed about 30 miles north to its home base at Pompano Beach Municipal Airport when it lost the door. The pilot landed the plane the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Wednesday was one of two days during the year that the golf course closes for maintenance. The course is also surrounded by residential areas and businesses.

Huge Round of 16 Women's Match Today at NCAA's in Athens

Duke's Beatrice Capra

Florida Junior Lauren EmbreeIt's a match that could've made a good finals.  It features two players with quite a bit of professional tournament experience.  Both players are members of two of the top college teams in the land.

It will be one of the feature matches of the tournament today when Duke's Beatrice Capra takes on Florida's Lauren Embree this morning at 11 am in the round of 16 of the NCAA Women's Singles draw.

No. 2 ranked Capra survived a tough match against Lindsey Hardenbergh on Thursday to advance.

"It was a really tough match," Capra said. "She definitely made me work to win that match today. I think in the first set, I did a good job of stepping up and moving forward in the court. In the second set, she made me play a lot more balls and I was kind of on the defense. I knew what I needed to do to win that match in the third set and I just did it."

Embree has won 20 consecutive matches and just led her Florida Gator team to the team championship.  She has a 31-5 mark on the season, and I'm puzzled why she is only seeded in the 9-16 range.

This should be a close two-set match or a tough three setter.  Even though Capra is favored, I wouldn't be surprised to see Embree win.

Could this be the last collegiate match for one or both of these players.  Embree has said she is coming back for her senior campaign, but you never know.

Looking forward to this one.

New Zealand Wants to Go "No Smoking"

NO SMOKING: New Zealand's government on Thursday announced a 40 percent hike in tobacco taxes over the next four years in pursuit of a pledge to wipe out smoking by 2025. About 20 percent of adults here smoke, compared with 16 percent in the U.S., 23 percent in China and 27 percent in France.

NO KIDDING: Already among the costliest in the world, a pack of cigarettes in the South Pacific nation will run 20 New Zealand dollars ($15) on average by 2016.

NO SHELF SPACE: Starting in July, retailers must hide cigarettes for sale below the counter.
