New Zealand Officials Get Shark

Officials in New Zealand are confident they shot the shark responsible for attacks.

Adam Strange, 46, was savaged by a shark, thought to be a 3.5m great white, while swimming at the popular beach west of Auckland just before 1.30pm yesterday.

All west coast beaches were initially closed but Auckland Council has announced their call to reopen them with the exception of Muriwai, a decision made with police, Surf Life Saving Northern Region and the Department of Conservation.

New Zealand Wants to Go "No Smoking"

NO SMOKING: New Zealand's government on Thursday announced a 40 percent hike in tobacco taxes over the next four years in pursuit of a pledge to wipe out smoking by 2025. About 20 percent of adults here smoke, compared with 16 percent in the U.S., 23 percent in China and 27 percent in France.

NO KIDDING: Already among the costliest in the world, a pack of cigarettes in the South Pacific nation will run 20 New Zealand dollars ($15) on average by 2016.

NO SHELF SPACE: Starting in July, retailers must hide cigarettes for sale below the counter.

Earthquake Damaged Cathedral to be Replaced by Cardboard

A beautiful cathedral, damaged by the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand will be replaced by a cardboard structure.

The 82-foot high building will be constructed with 104 tubes of cardboard. The structure will be a temporary replacement for the stone one which was ruined last year in an earthquake that killed 185 people and destroyed much of the picturesque city.

The Rev. Craig Dixon, a church spokesman, said the temporary cathedral would seat 700 people.

While we have the Crystal Catherdral in Southern California, now we have the Cardboard Cathedral in New Zealand.

New Zealand Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 11

I knew there was something I didn't like about hot air balloons.

A hot air balloon crash in New Zealand early Saturday killed 11 people -- the pilot and 10 passengers.

No one survived the crash, which happened on the outskirts of Carterton, a town northeast of Wellington.
A fire likely started on board the balloon, sending it plummeting to the ground, said Superintendent Mike Rusbatch, Wellington District commander for New Zealand Police.

It was not immediately clear what started the fire, though eyewitnesses said the balloon had hit a power line, according to police.
