Justin Verlander Pitches Second No-Hitter

Another no-hitter in the majors.

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander held the Toronto Blue Jays hitless in a 9-0 victory Saturday, four days after the Minnesota Twins' Francisco Liriano no-hit the Chicago White Sox.

It was the second no-hitter of Verlander's career. He also shut down the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007, a season after he was named AL Rookie of the Year.

Verlander had a perfect game going for 7 1/3 innings until J.P. Arencibia walked on a close pitch at the end of a 12-pitch at-bat. The following hitter, Edwin Encarnacion, bounced into a double-play, meaning Verlander still faced the minimum 24 batters through eight innings, and 27 for the game.

Rajai Davis struck out swinging, Verlander's fourth of the game, to complete the no-no. Verlander calmly celebrated -- after all, he's done this before -- just as he was getting swarmed by his teammates.

Earlier Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers' Yovani Gallardo took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals before yielding a leadoff single to Daniel Descalso.

On Friday night, St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia threw 7 1/3 perfect innings against the Brewers before settling for a two-hit shutout.

Also Friday, the Atlanta Braves' Derek Lowe pitched six no-hit innings against he Philadelphia Phillies before giving up two hits in the seventh and leaving with a blister in his right foot.

Six no-hitters, including two perfect games, were thrown last year.

Look for another no-hitter in the coming day, as thing like this seem to happen in "threes".

Golf Great Ballesteros Dies at 54

Seve Ballesteros, a five-time major champion whose passion and gift for imaginative shot-making invigorated European golf and the Ryder Cup, has died from complications of a cancerous brain tumor. He was 54.

A statement on Ballesteros’ website early Saturday said the golf great died peacefully at 2:10 a.m. local time, surrounded by his family at his home in Pedrena, in northern Spain.

Ballesteros won five major events: the British Open three times and the Masters Tournament twice. He amassed 87 titles worldwide, including a record 48 on the European Tour, collecting $7.6 million in winnings and much more in endorsements and other business interests.

In a Star Wars era, Ballesteros was Darth Vader to an entire contingent of American Luke Skywalkers.  He wasn't a bad guy, but he was a European that was brash and bold.  He also had every escape shot in the books.  He was exciting to watch and great to root against.

He underwent four operations at the end of 2008 for a brain tumor and began chemotherapy treatments after being released from Madrid’s La Paz hospital. After chemotherapy, he returned to public life the following year and made several appearances to promote his charity that funds brain tumor research.

In 2000, he was voted European Player of the Century. He was the region’s leading money-winner six times, and ended his 33-year playing career in July 2007, a week after saying he suffered heart palpitations. Since then, he devoted his time to a golf-course design business, a company that organized the Seve Trophy -- now known as the Vivendi Trophy -- on the European Tour and a venture that provided motivational coaching.

Ballesteros had two sons and a daughter with his wife, Carmen. Their marriage ended in divorce.

ATP Tour Match of the Week: Djokovic vs. Bellucci

Did I surprise you this week by picking this match and not the obvious Nadal/Federer showdown?

This is an inriguing match and surprisingly these two have only met once.  Djokovic won last year in Rome 6-4, 6-4.  Look at the tale of the tape and how even it is until you hit the last three lines and then it gets ugly.

Djokovic has quite a winning streak going and for that reason alone, this is a must see match.

I like Djokovic to keep the winning ways going as he will probably win in 3-sets.  6-4 in the third.

Here's hoping for a Nadal vs. Djokovic final on clay, in Spain.

Pakistan Didn't Know About CIA House in Abbottabad

The CIA conducted surveillance on Osama bin Laden from a safe house down the road in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, where bin Laden was killed Sunday, CBS News has confirmed.

A U.S. government source told CBS News' Chris Isham that Pakistani authorities are stunned -- and concerned -- that the U.S. was able to maintain the secret safe house without the knowledge of the ISI, Pakistan's federal intelligence service.

Under former Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf, the CIA was largely dependent on ISI for intelligence and conducted few, if any, unilateral intelligence operations. Now the U.S. is expecting Pakistan to push back further against any U.S. intelligence presence there.

The CIA and the ISI have worked closely together since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to hunt down al Qaeda operatives sheltering in Pakistan. But U.S. officials have often voiced suspicions that elements of the ISI were either linked to or supporting militants even as the two countries publicly talked of their alliance in the campaign against extremism.

The CIA safe house was part of an all-encompassing U.S. intelligence operation that ramped up after the discovery last summer of the suspicious compound that turned out to be bin Laden's.

The effort was so extensive and costly that the CIA went to Congress in December to secure authority to reallocate tens of millions of dollars within assorted agency budgets to fund it, U.S. officials told the Washington Post.
