Dick Williams, Hall of Fame Manager Dies

Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams, who won two World Series titles with Oakland and led two other franchises to pennants, has died. He was 82. Williams died from a ruptured aortic aneurysm at a hospital near his home in Henderson, Nev., the Hall of Fame said in a statement.

Williams, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the veterans’ committee in 2008, was a Major League Baseball manager for 21 years. He won World Series titles with the Athletics in 1972 and 1973, an American League pennant with the Red Sox in 1967 and the National League title with the Padres in 1984.
Other managerial stops for Williams, who had a 1,571-1,451 record as a manager, included the California Angels, Montreal Expos and Seattle Mariners.

Williams also played 13 major league seasons as an outfielder, third baseman and first baseman, retiring with a .260 batting average, 70 home runs and 331 runs batted in.

Williams was an interesting character, a good read is his biography written with Bill Plaschke called No More Mr. Nice Guy.

Rodriguez Resigns as Marlins Manager

It may be one the worst jobs in professional sports, manager of the Florida Marlins.

The fans don't care, the team is on a budget payroll, and anytime you develop a good player, he is either traded or becomes a free agent.  Plus, your team plays in the same division as the Phillies, Braves and Mets.

Edwin Rodriguez has resigned as manager of the Marlins after his team has gone 1-17 in June.

The Marlins accepted Rodriguez’s resignation prior to Sunday’s game against the Rays. Bench coach Brandon Hyde will manage Florida in their series finale against Tampa Bay, and the team has begun searching for a manager to finish the season.

Rodriguez, 50, resigned just days before what would have been his one-year anniversary as a big-league manager. He took over for Fredi Gonzalez on June 23, becoming the first Puerto Rican manager in major league history.

Former MLB Manager Chuck Tanner Dies

The manager who led the "We Are Family" Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series title, Chuck Tanner died today at the age of 82.

Tanner spent 19 years as a Major League manager, compiling a 1352-1381 record with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Pirates and Atlanta Braves.

He retired as a manager in 1988 and served most recently as a senior advisor to the Pirates, where he managed from 1977-85.

"Chuck spent his life serving baseball in a variety of roles, and I am particularly glad that in recent years, he returned to the Pirates, the club with which he will be forever linked," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.

Tanner was beloved by his players, a true "player's manager," and that he took that approach without losing control of his team is a testament to his people skills. Phil Garner, who played for the 1979 Pirates and maintained a close connection with Tanner in the decades that followed, said that is Tanner's true legacy as a manager.

To honor Tanner and his lasting legacy, the Pirates announced that they will assist in the creation of the Chuck Tanner 'We Are Family Fund," which will annually present an award to the Pirates Minor League staff person who best exemplifies Tanner's optimism, enthusiasm, work ethic and leadership.
