British Man Returns Library Book After 50 Years

Better late than never.

A man has returned an overdue library book more than 50 years after he took it out.

David Black returned the book to the fine art library in Edinburgh after they declared a fees amnesty. The amnesty allows overdue books to be returned without paying fines, meaning Black avoided paying a late fee of £2,762.55.

The 60-year-old took out the book in question - a work on artist Goya by Dr Xavier de Salas - on September 22, 1962 when he was just a schoolboy, reports The Mirror.

Black, who now works as an art correspondent, said: "I completely forgot to return it. It would pop up every now and again but each time it would slip my mind to actually do it."

"When I read about the amnesty I decided I must do it, if only to see the librarian's face.

The amnesty program is expected to bring in other older overdue books.
