Did a Tornado Hit New York City?
The National Weather Service will determine if yesterday's storm was a tornado, but what is for sure is that residents across the city are cleaning up all kinds of damage.
The storm killed one woman when a tree came crashing down on her car along the Grand Central Parkway.
More than 20,000 customers remain without power, the majority in Queens. The utility restored service to 13,000 overnight.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg last night toured the damage around Corona.
“This is one of those things that while it may be an act of God, it doesn't make things any easier for us,” said Bloomberg. “People are concerned and they have every right to be concerned. The good news is that most people are safe."
The powerful winds of the storm snapped trees like twigs – sending them crashing down onto cars and power lines.
The storm also lifted roofs off of buildings.
One woman said she got the fright of her life when she saw debris flying at her car.
The severity of this storm caught everybody off guard.
The Long Island Rail Road was forced to suspend service for hours in and out of Penn Station. The station itself was closed because of overcrowding.
Limited service was operating east of Jamaica station for much of the evening. Everything is back up and running normally, including the Port Washington line, which was experiencing delays and cancellations earlier today.
