Wimbledon Day 2 Match of the Day: Stepanek vs. Verdasco

Ok, I know what you're thinking.  The match of the day was going to be Isner and Mahut.  No, that would've been too easy.  It may be a great match, but I like the Radek Stepanek / Fernando Verdasco showdown.

This will be a Court 2 tussle and what you are sure to see id Stepanek charging into the net and Verdasco busting serves and forehands trying to pass Stepanek.

These two played on grass here at Wimbledon back in 2006 and it was a brutal 5-setter with Stepanek coming out on top.

I think it will go five again this time, and the Spaniard will be victorious.

Look for a 8-6 5th set to Verdasco.

Day 5: French Open Match of the Day - Malisse vs. Verdasco

If you like pure, unfiltered tennis shotmaking, this is the match for you.

I see it as a pretty even steven contest as clay isn't the best surface for either of these players.

They have only played once, that was in a Davis Cup tie earlier this year on hardcourts.  Verdasco won in straight sets, but Malisse is sneaky good in big situations.

Prediction:  I think Verdasco might have a little too much, but it's going to be close - 5 close sets.

Day 3: Australian Open Match of the Day

Men's Singles - 2nd Round
  Janko Tipsarevic(SRB) vs.   Fernando Verdasco(ESP)[9]

This is a great 2nd round match between two guys who have played three previous times.

Tipsarevic owns a 2-1 lead in head-to-head action.  All three matches were played on hard courts and Verdasco won the last meeting back in 2009 in Valencia.

Both players should have rooting sections from their respective countries in Serbia an Spain.

Tipsarevic likes playing in Australia, almost beating Roger Federer here in 2008.  Verdasco has played well in the Australian Open, reaching the semis in 2009.

It will be a minimum 4 set war, possibly 5 sets, but Tipsarevic will come out on top this time.

*Upset alert - In a second round women's match Rebecca will take Francesca Schiavone to the limit and win.

Day 11: U.S. Open Match to Watch

 Men's Singles - Quarterfinals
  Rafael Nadal(ESP)[1] vs.   Fernando Verdasco(ESP)[8]

This has been a tournament of Spanish matchups.  Here's another one.  Not sure how much Verdasco may have left after his miracle win over Ferrer.

He'll give it all he has, but it won't be enough against Nadal.

Verdict:  Nadal in 4.
