Limpert Tech on iHeartRadio: Robert Klevens, Prestige Collectibles, Japanese Sports Cards

The owner of Prestige Collectibles was at the National Sports Collectors Convention with an expansive booth full of Japanese sports cards. Klevens has been buying them for almost 35 years.

It’s a hobby he took up while living in Japan. He spent six years living there while running Tokyo’s largest card shop, The Ball Park. Now, he makes regular trips to the Far East from his Ft. Lauderdale, FL home to uncover cards and memorabilia.

It’s great to have the opportunity to talk with Robert.

Have a listen:

It begs the question, are his customers here in the States or halfway around the world?

“I have some customers in Japan, but mainly Americans,” explained Kleven, while conducting business at his booth not far from the front entrance. “There is a lot of interest in Sadaharu Oh cards, the Japanese home run king, items from when Babe Ruth toured Japan and the current list of Japanese MLB players.”

Shohei Ohtani’s success in the States has been a boon for Klevens and his business, which features primarily cards from various sports that were released in Japan.

Klevens noted that Americans have long been fascinated with Japanese culture and Japanese sports fans love baseball and follow MLB players. It’s a crossover.

“A lot of Americans also visit Japan and attend games there,” said Klevens.

Rick and Robert talk about that and a lot more.

Limpert Tech on iHeartRadio: Rich Mueller, Sports Collectors Daily, on 2024 NSCC

With a week until the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland, joined by Rick Mueller, editor of Sports Collectors Daily, to talk about the show and more.

This year, back in Cleveland, July 24-28, the National Sports Collectors Convention stands as an annual rendezvous for collectors, dealers, and all enthusiasts passionate about trading cards, autographs, and related memorabilia. In 1980, a small group of collectors convened in a modest hotel ballroom at the Los Angeles International Airport Marriott, marking the inaugural National Sports Collectors Convention.

Since those humble beginnings, The National has evolved into an extravagant, once-a-year event, now recognized as the premier showcase in the collectibles industry. To ensure the participation of collectors and exhibitors from across the nation, the founders made a visionary decision—the event would travel to different locations.

Rick and Rich talk about the show, Cleveland as a host city, what to look for and prices of various things, including autographs.

Going to be a huge week of sports collecting. Sports Collectors Daily will have all the coverage you can handle.

Mueller spent nearly 30 years as a television sports anchor and reporter and online journalist is President of Sports Collectors Daily Incorporated and the editor of SportsCollectorsDaily.com. He has earned numerous honors throughout his career including several prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards for sports reporting. Go to SportsCollectorsDaily.com to subscribe, for daily updates.

The National Sports Collectors Convention is an annual gathering of collectors, dealers and any other groups interested in collecting trading cards, autographs and other related memorabilia.

In 1980 a group of collectors gathered in a small hotel ballroom at the Los Angeles International Airport Marriott for what became the 1st National Sports Collectors Convention. From that, The National has grown into a once a year extravaganza that is the premier showcase event of the collectibles industry. Seeking to involve collectors from around the country, founders of the National stipulated that the event should move around the country to insure all collectors and exhibitors could participate. Early Nationals were held in St Louis, Chicago, Detroit as well as the NY metropolitan area.

Chicago is the site for NSCC 2023.
