Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 and iHeartRadio - Solar Eclipse Tech

For a few moments on Monday, we will experience the first total solar eclipse in over 40 years.
Some tech and tips for the solar eclipse.

Have a listen:

Remember, the shadow of the moon will first touch Georgia at 2:34 p.m. on Aug. 21 and leave the state at 2:40 p.m. The shadow of the moon passes by quickly, at about 1,800 miles per hour, according to NASA.
Never view the Sun with the naked eye or by looking through optical devices such as binoculars or telescopes!
Rick and Sully discuss, and don't look directly at the eclipse

1. Solar Eclipse Glasses

Solar Eclipse glasses resemble 3-D movie glasses and sell for as little as $2. They are sold at Best Buys, Kirkland’s and Lowe’s stores. Many stores are sold out and won't be getting more inventory, so look around and don't look directly at the solar eclipse.
Reputable vendors  https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters

2. Make your own viewing device here...   starting with just a long box or long tube

https://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/how-to-view-eclipse

3. Starbound Astronomy Viewing Chair

A $159  comfortable sturdy heavy-duty Chair designed for Sky Observing that folds flat for easy storage. The Chair is adjustable from 9" to 32". This allows for instant adjustment of the padded seat to whatever height you need for observing with your telescope. The chair has extra-thick padding and a heavily plated steel frame The Viewing Chair is available in two powder coated colors, White or Black (this version Black).

4. A Solar Filter for any Eclipse Photography

Black polymer is the most common filtering material for observing sunspots and granulation, through telescopes and binoculars.

These sheets are a quality product of Thousand Oaks Optical, Arizona, a manufacturer of safe solar filters for over 30 years. "Stronger than Mylar with the filtering properties protected within the substrate. Guaranteed five years."

Make a filter on your own for any telescope / binoculars / camera, and for a fraction of what factory made filters cost.

The sun will appear in a natural orange color when viewed through your telescope using this filter.
WARNING: ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE FILTER IS WELL ATTACHED TO THE TELESCOPE/BINOCULARS, USING STICKY TAPE, TO KEEP IT FROM FALLING WHILE OBSERVING!

5.  Apps for the Solar Eclipse

 - NASA Total Solar Eclipse 2017 Countdown: NASA has created this website, https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/, to guide you through the eclipse. You will find a live stream of the eclipse, an interactive eclipse map, a list of official eclipse events across the country,  eclipse science and education activities, such as making a solar viewing projector or a 3D printable pinhole projector, eclipse art projects and much more.
- Total Solar Eclipse 2017: This free app from Exploratorium gives you access to Exploratorium’s live video streams of the total solar eclipse. You can tune in to 5 simultaneous video streams: live coverage hosted by Exploratorium educators and NASA scientists; live coverage in Spanish; a non-narrated, 3-hour live telescope view of the full eclipse as seen from Oregon; a non-narrated, 3-hour live telescope view of the full eclipse as seen from Wyoming; and a live telescope view with live musical sonification and accompaniment by the Kronos Quartet.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 and iHeartRadio - Pool Safety Tips and Tech

We've entered the dog days of midsummer. That means some visits to our favorite swimming pools.
It's time to revisit some safety tips and safety tech for our pools as the summer days drag on...

Statistics:

- From 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day... many at swimming pools
- About one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

Rick and Sully talk about some tech to stay safe at the pool

Tips:
1. Never swim alone and always watch children in and around the water. Designate an “Adult Water Watcher.”
2. Teach kids how to swim. It’s a skill that will last a lifetime.
3. Stay away from drains in the pool. Make sure all drains are covered.
4. Make sure pools you use have a fence, a self-latching gate, alarms, a lifeguard (if a public pool) and is cleaned or covered.

Some New Gadgets and Tech you Can Use in and Around the Pool

1.  Pool Safety Pack

From Twist and Seal, it’s the new Pool Safety Pack.  It keeps water away from electrical cord connections and comes with three safety products – Cord Dome for power strips, Maxx for large cords, and Cord Protect for regular cords. This pack helps keeps the whole family safe by sealing off outside cords. Heavy grade industrial plastic is used, so you know these will be durable products that last.

2. Ahhsoles

Before stepping into the sand or walking around the pool, slip on a pair of Ahhsoles and experience incredible comfort with every step you take. It gets slippery poolside and Ahhsoles will give you traction and won’t slip or slide. Ditch that dull, everyday footwear and throw on a pair of Ahhsoles flip-flops! Perfectly named for that “Ahhh!” feeling you experience when taking your shoes off after a long day on your feet, this innovative brand designs an irresistible selection of wild foot bed textures that are “Offensively comfortable”. Ahhsoles also represent a step forward in flip-flop culture by deviating from the traditional idea of flip-flops and experimenting with vibrant textures, colors, and of course our unique name. We believe that our wild textures, styles, and name will become a major trend and fashion accessory rather than simply remaining normal everyday footwear.

3. Bio Key Touchlocks

www.bio-key.com

Perfect not only for travel, but keep your valuables safe in your pool locker.
- Bluetooth or fingerproff enabled smartlocks for $40-50
- Open with your smartphone

4. Bambino Mio Swim Diapers

Keep the entire pool and pool area safe and clean with swim diapers for the little ones. Bambino Mio is a cloth diaper company offering a range of products designed for the stylish, modern and eco-conscious parent. Bambino Mio diapers are as simple to use as a disposable, easy to put on and easy to wash. They also make swim diapers for the pool or bath and a range of potty training essentials for when it’s time to ditch the diapers.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 and iHeartRadio - Hotel Technology, The Jefferson

Rick and Sully this week, talk about Rick's fantastic visit to The Jefferson in Richmond, VA and see how they are keeping the traditional feel of the historic hotel and blending it with the technology we all want and use.

Have a listen to Rick and Sully:

Think of all the hotels you've ever stayed in. Some good, some bad, some meh.  The hotel and motel industry has become very competitive. It had to with the advent of AirB&B and the resurgemce of Bed & Breakfasts.

This has forced many old and historic properties to add and introduce new technology and up the ante when it comes to satisfying the current breed of traveler, especially business travelers.

Rick recently had the opportunity to stay at one of the old historic hotels in the country, The Jefferson in Richmond, VA. Also one of the most luxurious and now modern hotels you will find anywhere.

Here's what The Jefferson in undergoing and some of their tech

2.  Making it New, but Keping the "Old Feel"

Each of the hotel’s magnificent public spaces has received a refresh, including new furnishings in the Rotunda and Palm Court lobbies that convey the residential feel of the guest rooms.  The century-old Rotunda ceiling has been fully restored to preserve it for generations to come.

“The hotel has long been known for its breathtaking public spaces, exceptional service and beautiful décor.  This project has allowed us to elevate an already  unique travel experience to the next level of luxury,” says Joseph Longo, Managing Director.

The Ginter Suites are each over 1,000-square feet and named in honor of The Jefferson’s founder, Major Lewis Ginter. A welcoming foyer, with a half bath, leads into the spacious living room with comfortable seating, a large flat screen television, a table for dining and a beautiful kitchenette with mini refrigerator, wine racks, sink and coffee maker. The bedroom features a king bed, comfortable seating and a second flat screen television. A dressing area, providing plenty of storage, is located between the bath and the bedroom area. A connecting room or suite is available for some of the Ginter Suites at an additional charge.

*Bonus - A Little about Maj. Ginter...

In 1873, Ginter joined John F. Allen to form Allen & Ginter, a partnership selling foreign made tobacco. Shortly after, Ginter thought of manufacturing Virginia made cigarettes to compete with foreign products, and Allen & Ginter released their first line of domestic cigarettes as the "Richmond Gems" in 1875. Early production began in a factory with twenty young ladies who hand-rolled the cigarettes. The domestic cigarettes enjoyed phenomenal success, and Ginter began designs for more brands. Allen & Ginter soon released "Perfection," "Napoleon," "Virginia Pets," and "Old Dominion."
