Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - National Parks App and Unlocked Phones

**2016 happens to be the 100th year of our National Park System

Coming off the Memorial Day weekend, many of us and vacationers all over the country will be taking in out National Park System this summer.   Now, there are 59 apps for that...

Have a listen:

Chimani, Inc., in partnership with Subaru of America, has announced the launch of 59 mobile app travel guides – one for each of the 59 iconic national parks – in celebration of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial.

The national park apps by Chimani not only serve as a powerful park navigation tool to help visitors explore some of the country’s most beautiful areas, but also eliminate wasteful paper guides that end up in waste landfills. Subaru has partnered with Chimani to support the development of these new apps and to help educate visitors on the importance of reducing waste in national parks.

“We began developing the national park apps in 2010 to address the need for better access to park information, while also understanding the cellular connectivity issue most parks face,” said Kerry Gallivan, CEO and Co-Founder of Chimani, Inc. “Each of our national park apps includes curated, original content covering hiking trails and unique points of interest, park facilities, and more; along with GPS-enabled maps that work without a cell or Wi-Fi connection.”

Rick and Sully also take a look at "unlocked smartphones" and some of Rick's favorites

* Unlocked smartphones give flexibility. You aren't locked into a carrier, data plan or time frame. Basically you call the shots and can look for the best deals.

Here are four great unlocked smartphnones...

1. InfoSonics verykool Maverick LTE

InfoSonics Corporation (NASDAQ: IFON) has released their latest 4G LTE model, the verykool® Maverick LTE (SL5550), which will be available starting December 11th. Equipped with a 5.5” HD screen, Gorilla glass and both front and rear cameras with auto focus and LED flash, the SL5550  is designed as a world phone to promote seamless connectivity for travelers including 7 LTE bands, 5 3G bands and 2 2G bands.

The verykool® Maverick LTE, which comes in both single and dual SIM versions for operator and open market customers respectively, is expected to be available for purchase by Friday, December 11th at a suggested retail price of $189.90(U.S.).   And I've seen for as low as $129.
See at; http://www.verykool.net/Products/SL5550.

2. Nexus SP

This is a "large and in charge" powerful phone
$450

The Nexus 6P is Google’s latest cream of the crop. It is made for phablet-sized phone lovers who also appreciate a premium build, with a 5.7″ screen (AMOLED, QHD) and a Huawei-manufactured all-metal casing. Despite a mid-range price of $450, the 6P is equipped through-and-through to stand up with the big boys. We have a high-end octa-core Snapdragon 820 chipset with 3GB of RAM, 12.3MP large pixel (1.55µm) camera with laser auto-focus, hefty 3,450mAh battery, dual front-facing speakers, quick fingerprint scanner, and the very latest Android operating system.

The Nexus 6P is available with either, 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB storage capacities (no microSD expansion) and in the following colors: Matte Gold, Aluminum (silver), Graphite (grey), or Frost (white).

3. Honor 5X

From Huawei at $199 a great bargain for an unlocked phone
Huawei is probably the most recognized amongst the Chinese phone makers. This is because the company seizes opportunities. While renowned manufacturers continue to keep their top-end at wallet-busting prices, Huawei sought to match them at a fraction of the cost. Today, this means that you can get a premium built, metal uni-body smartphone for just under $200!

You may expect that the Honor 5X’s specs aren’t “top-end”, and you’d be right, but they’re nothing to scoff at. We have a “sweet-spot” 5.5″ 1080P IPS LCD panel, quad-core Snapdragon 616 chipset, 2GB/3GB of RAM, 16GB storage with microSD expansion, 13MP (f/2.0) rear and 5MP front cameras, 3,000 mAh battery, and rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) is running the show (with the promise for Android 6.0 Marshmallow), with Huawei’s custom user interface on top.

You can find the Honor 5x in either gold, silver, or grey.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - Omni Bedford Springs and Grilling Gadgets

Rick is Pennsylvania this week... kind of Western Pennsylvania as he was in Pittsburgh and then Bedford, PA at the historic, Omni Bedford Springs Resort and Spa. A great resort that has been around for over 2 centuries. 12 Presidents have visited the resort and President James Buchanan came here for 40 years and made it his Summer White House.  Great golf, relaxing and hot springs in the Allegheny Mountains.

Barbecue season will soon be in full swing. And if drumsticks are on your must-grill list, try Outset’s chicken drumstick roaster ($25) that will take away the hassle of constantly flipping your meat. The nonstick contraption can roast up to 16 drumsticks at once. Use it in the oven once the weather cools down. Find it at Chapters Indigo stores or various spots online.

3.  Thermacell Mosquito lantern

It doesn't matter where yoyu live in this country, be it the Pacific Northwest, the South  or even Midatlantic or Midwest regions, there is one problem just about every faces each spring and summer. That problem would be mosquitos and other insects that bite.

So an introduction to Thermacell and their all encompassing line of mosquito repelling lanterns, torches and repellers is necessary. Thermacell does something no one else does and that is use their technology to put a repellant that is a copy of the insecticide produced by chrysanthemums in their products. It proves to be 90% effective and welcome relief to those looking to spend an afternoon or evening outdoors with family, friends or a good book.

Thermacell says a latern will cover a 225-square feet area at up to four hours per mat or 12 hours for a refill kit. A Thermacell latern is not only more effective, but it is safer than using citronella candles.
Prices for lanterns start around $30.

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - OKC and RiverSport Rapids

Rick is in Oklahoma City for the opening of the new RiverSport Rapids...  Oklahoma City’s new $45.2 million whitewater rafting and kayaking center. Geared for both family fun and elite athlete training, the 11-acre RIVERSPORT Rapids whitewater center was completed as part of MAPS 3, the one-cent sales tax initiative dedicated to metro area projects.

Recirculating channels pumping treated water create class II-IV rapids and offer a range of experiences for whitewater rafting, tubing, kayaking and canoeing.

The lower flow channel offers great family rafting and tubing experiences – no previous experience necessary.
High-octane Class IV rapids on the Olympic style course will challenge elite athletes from around the world for both training and competition.

The course is being used to qualify for the U.S. Olympic canoe/kayak slalom team.
And follow @VisitOKC on Twitter and have a listen:

Rick and Sully also talk about some other new Olympic technology to be on the lookout before and during the Rio 2016 Games.

1.  The High Tech Suits the US Track and Field Team will be Wearing from Nike

Nike has consulted with its athletes and designers and tested its products in labs to provide the best performance results possible with the hopes of its athletes bringing home medals at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

From Nike: "The uniforms are not smooth. It has texture, too. It’s kind of the same approach where we create mini turbulences and air channels to propel the athlete forward. At the fastest moving parts of the body—the forearms and legs—you’ll see the highest concentration of those aeroblades.”

2. NBC to Stream more than 6000 hours of content from the Games

The cable and media giant will relay 1,500 hours of content on 11 of NBCUniversal's television networks such as Bravo and NBC, in addition to 4,500 hours online on its NBC Sports Live Extra mobile app and website, which will also be made available on in its X1 video service.

Due to the short time zone difference between Brazil and the United States, the Rio games will feature more live events such as track and field and swimming than the games in London, over 17 consecutive nights in August.

3. Snapchat and the Olympics

The Olympics are coming to Snapchat. The app scored a deal with Comcast Corp.’s NBC to show highlights from the 2016 Summer Games, the first time the U.S. network has agreed to share video of the sporting contest.

Snapchat Inc. will set up a dedicated channel on the mobile app for the games in Rio De Janeiro. Media company BuzzFeed will curate short clips and behind-the-scenes content into a Discover channel on the app for two weeks, while Snapchat creates daily “live stories” using content from NBC, athletes and sports fans at the scene.

4. Google to Offer Enhanced Maps of Olympic Venues

Besides plenty of local visitors, the International Olympic Committee predicts at least half a million people from overseas will descend on Rio de Janeiro for the Games in August.

No doubt lots of them will be carrying smartphones, probably loaded with Google Maps, an app certain to be indispensable in the new and busy surroundings.

Google is keen to make its maps offering as useful as possible for those heading to the Olympics, this week rolling out updated maps for 25 official indoor venues as well as enhanced maps for 12 official outdoor venues for the Games. The new content comes just a few weeks after the app introduced real-time transit information for the Brazilian host city.

To access the new content, open Google Maps on your computer or mobile device, search for an Olympic venue, zoom into it and then click or tap on it.

- Rick continues his excursion to Oklahoma City, he will be going down the rapids, and ie heading to Micky Mantle's Steakhouse and a Oklahoma City Dodgers minor leage baseball game tonight.
