Wireless Wednesday for 8/29/13: With Mitch Evans - All About LinkedIn

Rick and Mitch talk about LinkedIn today.

* TOPICS -   U.S. Open tennis is underway and we take a look at LinkedIn today. - and the App of the Week

LinkedIn: A social media platform for professionals

225 million+ members | Manage your professional identity. Build and engage with your professional network. Access knowledge, insights and opportunities.
You need to have a LinkedIn account!

1. * LinkedIn news - 14-Year-Olds Can Join LinkedIn, Size Up Colleges

LinkedIn has lowered the minimum age for users to 14.
Should your 14-year old have a LinkedIn account?
As of Sept. 12, the age-18 minimum for LinkedIn membership will disappear. Being 14 will be sufficient in the U.S. and Canada.
LinkedIn’s new initiative centers on specially designed pages for universities. Late last week, LinkedIn’s higher education evangelist, John Hill, offered previews of new LinkedIn pages for Carnegie-Mellon and New York University. In addition to all the usual fare — such as campus news, photos and financial-aid facts — LinkedIn will provide lots of unique data about alumni career paths, as well some help in reaching out to individual graduates.
LinkedIn's thought is to try and make money off colleges and universites

2.   Get the LinkedIn app for your phone, iPad, etc

A great app  upgraded with faster search
Faster search, easier  to find other people

3.  LinkedIn Redesigns Group Pages

The "groups" section of LinkedIn is one of the most popular area.
The redesign is part of LinkedIn's continued efforts to make the site "easier and simpler to use," according to a press release. It also puts more emphasis on user content, making it easier to determine who has commented on a Group post or follow a conversation in the comments thread. Group moderators will also be able to customize the Group's image at the top of the page.

4.   Some LinkedIn Tips

a.  Optimize your LinkedIn profile

Update your profile image. Upload a head shot if you haven’t already. It doesn’t need to be professionally photographed, but it should be clear and appropriate for your industry.

3.  Satechi Smart LED Desk Lamp ($99)

When you pull an all-nighter because procrastinating seemed like a good idea at the time, a dependable desk lamp is a necessity. This one from Satechi has a built-in USB charger, dimmer touch controls and a long-lasting LED bulb, plus a timer so -- even if you fall asleep in your textbook -- you'll at least save energy.

4  Sticky Door Mat  $50-60

These unique mats are now available to protect many types of carpeted or hard surface floors in the home. Tracked in dirt on the shoes of family members or guests will no longer be a problem. Floors will stay cleaner and you won't have to say, “please wipe your feet” or “please take off your shoes”.
Sticky Mats come in different sizes and shapes, colors and designs.
With a Sticky Mat at the doorway, the dirt and grime gets automatically stuck to the mat. Kids love to see the footprints magically left behind on the mat

App of the Week   - For the Fantasy Football Geeks

Fantasy Alarm - Free for both iOS and Android

For Fanatsy Football players - this app keep you up to the minute on injuries

NFL players take a beating on the field every Sunday, then do their best to recover over the course of the week before doing it all again. Bump, bruises, and even serious injuries are bound to occur over the course of a season. All of that is to be expected, but what fantasy football owners almost never expect is the game time scratch. This is an occurrence that has put an end to more than a few teams’ weeks before they even began. FantasyAlarm will make sure you don’t fall victim to the sudden roster changes by alerting you when a player on your fantasy team goes down with an injury or is deactivated before kickoff, giving you just enough time to make a quick adjustment that might save your week.

Wireless Wednesday for 8/14/13: With Mitch Evans - Gadgets that Multi-task

Rick and Mitch talk about gadgets that multi-task this week and an app that allows you to easily rent a car.

Have a listen:

* TOPICS - Multi-tasking Gadgets - Gadgets that serve more than one purpose
-Rick is in Cincinnati this week at the Western & Southen Open Tennis Tournament - Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray are all in Cincy

- He's always multi-tasking - so let's talk multi-tasking
We all want to get our money's worth out of our gadgets, so sometimes they can do us proud and serve more than one use...

1.    West Bend 4-Slot Egg-and-Muffin Toaster   $59.00

Four slice toaster, with egg cooker and meat warmer, 1800-watt, cetl listed
Defrost function for defrosting breads, bagels and croissants
Light to dark control setting for toasting preferences
Egg cooker tray to scramble or poach eggs, basket to soft or hard boil up to 8 eggs
Meat tray to warm pre-cooked meat, fruit or vegetables

2.  PHILIPS COOLING PAD

Cooling pads can be clunky platforms that protect your knees from the heat generated by laptops. In addition to this, the Philips Notebook cushion speaker pumps up the volume of the notebook (of course, it uses up a USB connection too). The Notebook sleeve, on the other hand, protects against heat and doubles up as a useful protective cover for carrying the machine.

3.  Zumreed X2 Hybrid headphone

Zumreed X2 Hybrid headphone
Available abroad, this is a headphone that bundles up as a speaker. This noise cancellation headphone has a switch that, when turned on, transforms the outer ear cups of the headphones into speakers. The ear cups can be rotated and the headphone can be placed on a flat surface while in the speaker mode. For using it as the speaker, you need to charge it using a USB cable. A one-hour charge gives it enough juice for four hours of music playback.

4  ECLIPSE case by  ElementCase.com

A great protective case, but with a bonus.
Designed with a unique resonant audio technology – Sound Boost System (SBS) – to channel sound from the phone’s rear-facing speaker around to the front, these impact-resistant, carbon-fiber laden cases offer superior protection and multimedia enjoyment.

5.  Blue Microphones Mikey Digital

Why We Like It: Plug this award-winning mic into your iPhone, Touch, or iPad to transform it into a versatile mobile recording rig. Back on campus, you might use it to capture lectures, interviews, or your own personal voice memos. But out and about, it's great for capturing CD-quality stereo music, whether it be a bar band or full blown concert. Plus, it's the world's only mobile mic with both a 30-pin Apple connector and a multi-source auxiliary input, so you can plug your guitar (or any device with a line out) right into it. And since it rotates 230 degrees, it's also great for recording quality audio with whatever video you're capturing on the go with pretty much any i-thing.
How Much: $100

Wireless Wednesday (Monday) for 7/25/13: With Mitch Evans - Tennis and BB&T Atlanta Open

*Tennis Technology*

1. Hawk-Eye - Technology

Tennis' instant replay challenges.  Very accurate.
Players get 3 challenges per set -  Additional challenges if they are right
Replays are shown on big video screens on the court  and fans get into it

2.  Racquets

Not sure how much more racquets can change, but they have.
They continue to get lighter.
Wilson is making an effort use fewer cross strings - that equals more spin.
So far the results have been positive.

3.  Strings

Big changes have occured in strings over the last 5-7 years.  String technology has evolved more than anything.

It has changed in the past decade because strings made of polyester blends can create more topspin, allowing players to swing harder, keep the ball in the court and extend rallies.

“For every 100 r.p.m.’s of topspin you can put on the ball, you can reduce the flight distance by 6 to 12 inches,”
The game has changes and the pro have all gone to the new strings.

4.  Wilson's High Tech Innovation Center in Chicago

The Innovation Center, a nondescript one-story brick building located a few blocks from O’Hare Airport, houses the gadgets and gizmos, and the brainpower that develops Wilson’s rackets. This year, the Innovation Center added a Doppler radar device called the TrackMan, which was connected to a small practice court to measure the speed, flight pattern and revolutions per minute of a ball when struck by a player. The tests confirmed that the string pattern was the key variable affecting spin, with other tweaks to the racket frame necessary to fully enhance the effect.

5.  For those Going to BB&T Atlanta Open
