iPad Free Apps of the Week: CBS Sportsline and Words with Pirates

Two apps this week as Words with Pirates is only going to be around for a limited time.

First lets look at the CBS Sportsline Football app.  If you follow NFL football while on the go, you'll want this app, if you play Fantasy Football on the CBS Sportsline platform, you'll need this all.

First, for following all the action, this is one stop shopping.  Game scores, recaps, and updates all in motion.  Highlight one game to follow even more closely.  The scoring updates and videos are great.  Also will give you a snapshot of the stats in all of the games.

Next, this is the app to have for all your CBS Sportsline Fantasy Football action.  Do anything here that you can do on your Mac or PC.  Add and drop players, set your lineups and see your team get or lose points as it happens.

It's easy to use and beautiful to look at. Get this for your iPhone or iPad.

Also a bonus pick this week as it is available for a limited time only.  I guess it's in honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day which was on Sunday, now we have Words with Pirates.

If you like Words with Friends and pirates you'll get a kick out of this app.  Don't take it too seriously as this is meant for fun.  Make words like "yarrrr" and "arrrgh" and earn points.  Great sound effects and a fun layout for this app.  Try it out and get a laugh.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: Compromising Positions

This Jenna Bayley-Burke looks like a fun read.

It also remains #1 on the Kindle free book list.  Here are a couple reviews:

With sensual love scenes, flirty repartee, and a man and woman clearly meant to be together, you get everything you could ever want in a romance novel. Overall, I have to say that Compromising Positions is a must read!
~ Long and Short Reviews

Compromising Positions would have to be one of the best contemporary romance novels I have read in a long time. Jenna Bayley-Burke delivers it all, romance, humor, and great chemistry between her hero and heroine. It is so well written. The pace is great, and the story line fantastic.

Best Buy CEO: iPad Hurting Notebook Sales

In a report that suggests rumors of tablet computers could be biting into the notebook and netbook markets is justified, Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn told The Wall Street Journal that Apple’s iPad has “cannibalized” sales of notebooks by as much as 50 percent. Dunn told the paper that sales of smartphones and portable computers continued to rise, thanks in part to devices like the iPad. It's a very different environment now," the chief electronics analyst for market researcher NPD Group Stephen Baker told the Journal. "The real cool stuff now will be the tablets, e-readers and probably the higher-end digital cameras."

A July report from a Barclays Capital analyst said Apple would sell about 20 million iPads in 2011, negatively affecting lower-cost notebooks as well as the netbook market.

The iPad is expected to account for 74.1 percent of global tablet shipments, with the remaining portion going to “a mix of older PC-type tablet products and competitive slates.” In 2011, as the competition begins seriously filling out, iSuppli still expects Apple to command 70.4 percent of the market, and nearly two-thirds market share through 2012. At present, while a number of tablet devices are set to launch — running Windows 7, Android and webOS — iSuppli said it believes none of these are ready to be serious competitors to the iPad.

Attracting the interest of many, Samsung is showing off its Galaxy Pad tablet, which includes the Android operating system and features such as 3G and WiFi capability, a 16:10 screen ratio, a SDHC memory expandability, a DMB tuner for TV viewing and something the iPad lacks—a front-facing camera for video calling.  It looks like tablets have arrived and they are here to stay.

iPad Free App of the Week: Bravo Now

It's no secret than women love to watch the shows and drama that happens each and every week on Bravo.

It is a dirty little secret that men like to watch the campy antics as well.  I have to admit it, I'm looking forward to a new season of Real Housewives of Orange Countyto see what Vicki, Tamara and the whole gang are up to.

This free Bravo Now app will let you get a taste of how your favorite characters on your favorite shows are doing.

There are clips and blogs from the Bravo TV Web site, all in a neat package. The app can host second-screen live-event programming, and that will appeal to many watching episodes and specials on Bravo.

Full episodes of the shows are not free, but they are available for purhase.

Bravo is calling this "interactive TV" and this is where television viewing is headed.

The app also features blogs, and extensive collecton of short clips from the shows and a social media component so you can interact with your fans.

There is a lot to this app, and it's free so go and get it.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: The Big 5-OH

This books looks like fun.

Olivia Wallace has a birthday curse . . . or so she thinks. It was a broken heart on her 16th, a car accident on her 21st, pneumonia on her 30th, and a fall down a flight of stairs on her 35th. There were Ohio blizzards on her 38th, 39th, and 40th; and six days before her 45th, she lost the love of her life to a heart attack. Numbing grief stole that birthday and a couple more to follow and, on the morning of her 48th birthday, she received the call she’d dreaded ever since losing her mom so many years ago…she was diagnosed with stage-3 ovarian cancer. The doctors didn’t hold out a lot of hope, but Liv survived and maintained her faith. Months of surgeries and chemotherapy and radiation treatments followed.

But now, as her 50th birthday creeps up the icy Ohio path toward her, her hair has grown back, her energy level is up, and she is officially cancer free. It makes her nervous. After everything she’s gone through, Liv hates the idea of driving on icy roads and returning to work as an O.R. nurse in a local Cincinnati hospital.

Her best friend Hallie knows just the thing to break Liv out of the winter doldrums, while providing a safe haven of warmth, sunshine, and a time to regroup: a holiday in the Florida sunshine!

It's by Sandra D. Bricker and it's free right now in the Kindle Store.
