New Rollercoasters at Coney Island

The first new roller coasters to be built at Coney Island in eight decades were opened on Wednesday as part of efforts to reverse the decline of New York City's world-famous theme park.

The Soarin' Eagle and Steeplechase roller coasters are part of the new multimillion-dollar Scream Zone theme park, that replaced several more ramshackle attractions that had their own loyal followings.

A rezoning took place at Coney Island in 2009 in an attempt to revitalize the neighborhood by preserving some of its historic attractions while encouraging the development of hotels, restaurants and retail stores in the amusement district and affordable housing in the surrounding residential neighborhoods.

The City bought three parcels of land, totaling 6.9 acres, and signed a 10-year lease with Central Amusement International, a New Jersey-based subsidiary of the Italian amusement park-ride manufacturer Zamperla, to build new theme parks. The first, Luna Park, opened last year, helping attract more than 450,000 visitors to the neighborhood last summer, the City said.

Under the revitalization plan, the City is spending more than $150 million on improvements to Coney Island, which has attracted thrill-seeking New Yorkers and tourists since the late 19th century.

Mayor Bloomberg says the investment will result in 6,000 permanent jobs and create $14 billion of economic activity in New York over the next 30 years.

The redevelopment has had detractors, stirring the same sort of feelings as did the transformation of Times Square from an edgy neighborhood into a family-friendly tourist attraction.  Should be a big summer at Coney Island.

Real Madrid Wins Spanish Cup, Drops Trophy off Bus

sergio-ramos-drops-copa-del-rey-trophy by EgotasticMedia

It's the equivalent of Aaron Rodgers dropping the Lombardi Trophy during the Super Bowl Parade in Green Bay.

Real Madrid footballer Sergio Ramos dropped the Copa Del Rey trophy from the front of a double decker bus the team was traveling in.  The bus promptly ran over the shiny piece of metal and destroyed it.  The trophy survived the 12 foot fall, but couldn't survive being hit by a multi-ton bus.

Imagine the horror if the Stanley Cup fell off a truck and was hit by a snow plow in Canada.  Sheer chaos.

Nintendo to Announce Wii 2 this Summer

Rumors are that Nintendo is announcing its next-generation console at the E3 Expo this June.

French tech publication 01.net reports that the console is codenamed "Project Café" and will feature an in-built sensor bar, dual analog sticks, a standard d-pad, and trigger buttons. Game Informer said the new Wii will have HD support, while Kotaku reports that the console's specs will be "more powerful" than an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Nintendo "declines to comment on speculation or rumors," but IGN and Game Informer both cited anonymous sources claiming that Nintendo will announce the next-generation console in at E3 this year and launch it in 2012.

It's been almost 5 years since the first Wii hit the market.  A change is needed and welcomed.

Arizona

Hmmmm... Arizona getting 2.5 points.  I love it.  I think the road for UCONN comes to an end today.  Arizona has found its game and they way they beat Duke, there appears to be no stopping them, at least in this round.

The Wildcats are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog and an even more impressive 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS win; showing they build on impressive wins.  That is a must in the tournament.

UCONN has played 8 games in 13 days.  They are tired.  I see Arizona taking control in the second half and pulling away with the win.  So you might want to look at the moneyline in this games as well.

In the other game:

I can't go against Butler.  They are getting 4 from Florida.  The Gators are more athletic, talented and may have the best player on the court in Erving Walker.  Still, take Butler and the 4.

So today's picks are Arizona and Butler.
