Book Pick of the Week: Betty White: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life

The immortal Betty White.

Betty White: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life (becker&mayer!, $35.00 US, $46.00 CAN) is a visual salute to the First Lady of Television, spanning her more than 80 years as a performer and star of such legendary series as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls.

Packed with photographs from her decades in comedy as well as a contestant on game shows including What’s My Line?, Password, To Tell the Truth, and Match Game, interviews with friends and colleagues, such as Carol Burnett and Candice Bergen, and a foreword by Gavin MacLeod, the book chronicles 100 highlights from the acting life and passions that have defined an entertainment career like no other.

White’s pioneering legacy extends back to the earliest days of TV in the 1950s, when she served as both producer and star of the sitcom Life with Elizabeth during an era that predated glass ceilings. The volume also vividly illustrates the beloved White’s lifelong advocacy for animals as well as the masterful comic versatility she displayed even as she closed in on the century mark.

Revel in Betty White’s talent, elegance, fortitude, and humor with this photographic retrospective of her life told through 100 moments that have defined an entertainment career like no other.

Kindle Pick of the Week: Mart of Darkness

The CEO of AllMart, the world's largest chain of discount stores, has become unhinged and the feds send a team of ultra-deep special forces to stop him. This gritty, genre-bashing, darkly-comic dystopian/sci-fi/thriller mashup takes you on a hallucinogenic carnival ride through the company's flagship store that covers an ever-expanding swath of southern Ohio. Told through the horrified eyes of K, an office temp who has accidentally been recruited for his "special skills," Mart of Darkness pits the team against feral live-in shoppers, morality-free executives and quantum technology that threatens to collapse the global economy. K is in way over his head and can't find a way out.

Join him as he crosses the Videocean, passes through the Great Gates of Giardiniera and gains a lasting appreciation for early Native American hunting practices. Chug an energy drink, don't expect cell phone service inside, and climb on for the ride!

A great read by Phil Granchi.

Kindle Pick of the Week: I'm Not Single, I Have a Dog

Once upon a time in America, marriage was the norm. But now, for the first time since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking these numbers in 1976, there are more single Americans than married — a total of about 50.2%, or 124.6 million American adults are single.

Just as the single life overtakes marriage in the United States, a new book from McFarland Publishers hits the market. I'm Not Single, I Have a Dog: Dating Tales From The Bark Side is the perfect holiday gift for singles, anyone who ever dated the wrong person (and who hasn’t?), and the 63.4 million Americans who love their dogs. Celebrating the human/canine bond, this thoughtful and funny memoir is about acceptance, love, and finding your own happily ever after.

Author Susan Hartzler shares her own personal journey to find Mr. Right inviting readers to follow her through life’s many ups and downs on her way to finding unconditional love. The book begins on a purposeful trip to the pound where she hopes to find a dog to care for — one that will sniff out the bad guys. Susan’s personal journey is full of the hard decisions it took to learn to put herself first and stop entering and staying in unhealthy relationships.

Susan might not have found a man, but she finds her dog, giving her a sense of purpose and helping her discover meaning in her crazy world. By saving a dog, she rescues herself, loving herself as much as her dog loves her. After all, there is no love like dog love. It can change your life forever, completing you with unconditional love.

The book is already receiving rave reviews, like this one from the Santa Barbara News-Press, and has been selected by Modern Dog Magazine to be part of Connie's Book Club.
