Storms Hit Smokie Mountain National Park

Severe weather thunderstorms slammed into parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and nearby communities in East Tennessee on Thursday.

The storms toppled trees onto streets and homes, leaving tens of thousands without power and stranding and injuring park visitors.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that the storms barrelled through the area late Thursday afternoon, bringing winds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Park spokeswoman Melissa Cobern told the newspaper that park rangers and emergency personnel were checking on reports of fatalities and people in distress.

Some motorists were believed to be trapped in their vehicles, but crews were having difficulty getting deep into the park.

At least a dozen people are known to be injured.

Death Toll Still Unknown at Reno Air Races

A racing plane plunged into the stands at an air race event in Reno in what an official described as a "mass casualty situation."

It wasn't immediately known how many people were killed. But video of the crash showed a horrific scene of bodies and wreckage at the front of the stands.

The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race.

Kind of ironic, but earlier this week, race officials posted this video of how fans could stay safe and healthy at the races.  This ended up being a little more serious than a sunburn.

Alex Trebek Injured Chasing Crook

Alex Trebek was put in "Jeopardy" when he chased down a thief at his hotel in San Francisco.  He is now on crutches after the ordeal.

Trebek, who just turned 71 this month, caught her stealing cash and a bracelet from his mother, which he had worn on the show every single day for 20 years. He also injured his other foot when he fell. The woman was taken into custody by San Francisco police and booked on felony burglary and possession of stolen property.
