iPad Free App of the Week: Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This free iPad app gives you access to the complete Collegiate Dictionary, and it gives you functions that the paid app doesn’t have. I’m not the best speller in the world, and it’s sometimes hard to look up a word I don’t know how to spell, but the free app has Voice Lookup so I just say the word I need. The Merriam-Webster iPad app also has synonyms and antonyms, audio pronunciations, and example sentences.

There’s also a Word of the Day and a scrolling index that lets you browse and a history of words you’ve looked up previously. The catch is that your Universal Device ID may be used by advertisers and ad networks to serve ads to you. You can get more information about their privacy policy on the app page in the iTunes store.

As a bonus, even when you may looking up the definition of another word, if you see a word in the definition you are curious about, you can touch it and the app will give you all the info about that word that you would ever want.

iPad Free App of the Week: Crackle

Watch movies and television shows on your iPad with this free app put out by Sony.

It also works for the iPhone and iPod Touch offering hundreds of TV and movie titles for free viewing on-demand with ads.

Crackle’s content includes movies from Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Classics, all Sony-owned labels. The site competes with Hulu, owned in part by NBC Universal, Fox and Disney.

The movies and TV shows at Crackle are uncut, though they are interrupted for quick commercial breaks that cannot be fast-forwarded.

Some of the content the site was featuring prominently on its Web site Monday included the TV showsSeinfeld and Married … With Children and the movies 21, The Last Picture Show, Flatliners and The Da Vinci Code.

The ads aren't that intrusive and I can live with them.  New content is supoosed to be added weekly.  So far I like it.
