Great to be back on with Carol McManus. My 17th appearance on The LinkedIn Lady Show

Here is Carol's show summary and more topics that this were discussed...

Did you know that according to accounting firm PwC the North American sports market is expected to grow another $12 billion dollars by 2020, due in large part to media rights and distribution channels including social media?

That’s the kick-off for today’s LinkedIn Lady Show brought to you by CKC Global Media. My special returning guest is Rick Limpert. Rick is an Atlanta-based freelance writer and columnist. You can see his work on Yahoo News and Sports as a contributor, along with CBS Interactive and his new gadget/tech website, WirelessWednesday.live

He has been featured in numerous publications including Sports Illustrated, Fox SportsNet and The Atlanta Journal Constitution. He’s on every week with “Sully” on iHeartRadio and Radio 105.7 in Atlanta, along with a weekly Internet radio show and podcast called “The Tech of Sports” on the Modern Life Podcast Network. He co-authored the best-selling tennis book The Invaluable Experience with professional tennis player Danielle Lao and don’t forget about his sports travel book, The Fam Trip Field Guide which is a must-read for anyone interested in travel, golf or being a travel writer.

Today we will cover a range of topics including NFL’s new social media limits for teams, the reason Bass Pro Shops was better positioned to buy Cabela’s than the other way around, sports cyberbullying, how Reebok is using social media to rebrand itself, why NASCAR driver Carl Edwards is still not on Twitter, and how golfers used social media to honor Arnold Palmer.

Always great to be on with Carol.

Here are the show notes:

Rick's 16th appearance with Carol ... is that a record?
___________________________________________________________________
1.  Rick Launching his own site... WirelessWednesday.live

- Rick has written tech and sports tech pieces for other websites for over six years, and he will continue to do so. But it's time to start my own site and continue growing my brand.
Rasons for launching:
Will have total control over the content on the site.
Allow guest posts
Sell and/or trade ads
Expand the possibilities of posting videos on the site

2.   Sprint and the Copa Americana 2016

Sprint leveraged it's partnership with the 2016 Copa America to promote it's 5G technology. Sprint conducted 5G demonstrations at various Copa venues including on in Philadelphia on June 14, 2016, right before the Chile vs. Panama group play game. It's a known fact that Sprint president and CEO, Marcelo Claure is a big soccer fan and Sprint has been making inroads with the Hispanic wireless market.

At the Philadelphia demonstration, Spring Chief Technology Officer John Saw was telling media and fans that Sprint has nothing to hide, when it comes to showing off their 5G.

"It still maybe two years down the road, but we have "experience" and want customers to see now that we will be ready."

Saw says with the advent of virtual and augmented reality, 5G will be necessary. Sprint's demonstration featured a soccer ball kicking cage, where the actions was streamed in perfect HD, by 5G to a display in Sprint's Fun Zone. Another prop was a moving antenna that showed hoe 5G produces no latency or disruption when in use.

3. Xfinity Home and Comcast invite Rick to the 'Home of the Future" and then they Tweet it out
Xfinity / Comcast - trying to use social media to promote their Xfinity Home products and the connected home. A running stream on Comcast's and Xfinity's websites give a play-by-play on how their products benefit customers and homeowners. Home security is their top priority and then making the home more user-friendly.

They even tweeted out a pic from my visit... nice touch.

4. Twitter tests its "Live Sports" feature with Wimbledon

More and more live sports will be coming to social media
The feature is a window into what NFL live-streaming may look like.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has made a point of talking about how the future of his social network is all about live experiences, with the company’s recent deal to livestream NFL games being a big step in that direction. On Wednesday, users got a glimpse of what that future might look like when Twitter rolled out a test by streaming free tennis coverage from Wimbledon.

The new feature has its own dedicated web address, much like Twitter Moments do (Moments are curated selections of tweets about a news event), except this one has the word “live” in the URL. On the desktop version, a live-stream of the tennis matches appears in a standalone video window on the left-hand side, with a feed of related tweets in a column next to it. In the mobile version the video window is at the top and remains there as you scroll.

5.  Rick at the SVG College Sports Summit

The SVG College Sports Summit is held every June in Atlanta. On display is all the latest tech for broadcasting and promoting college sports.

Big talk was broadcasting and streaming live on the internet and social media.
Nielsen has found that tweets published during live airings of programs are some of the most effective. People are much more likely to keep an eye on, and engage with, tweets posted by their favourite team if, for example, they’re watching them compete in the World Cup.
Facebook Live:  Robert Shaw, Global Sports Media Partnerships at Facebook took the main stage at the Summit to explain how Facebook Live is already growing.
At Facebook, Shaw works with partners worldwide to best utilize the Facebook strategy to achieve broadcast and publishing strategies. At CSS, Shaw shared some of the latest developments at the social media juggernaut and share his advice for how to best utilize the platform to engage fans and alumni in the college sports space.

Leading by example as the brand’s official U.S. Olympic athlete and campaign spokesperson will be Megan Rapinoe, a London 2012 gold medal-winning soccer player for the U.S. Women’s National Team and self-professed tryathlete. “I’m excited to partner with vitaminwater on the #beatryathlete contest because I’m definitely a ‘try’ person,” said Rapinoe. “I love to try new things and always challenge myself to enjoy new experiences, places and anything outside the norm.”

-  Lesson: Olympics can be a boom for some partnerships

7.    Olympics' Agency Predicts Summer Games Will Be 'Largest Social Media Event Ever'

Speaking at Cannes, Brian Yamada, VML chief innovation officer, said he expects the 2016 Olympics to be the "largest social media event ever." He made the declaration while chatting onstage with IOC head of marketing Melinda May.

Historically, the Olympic Games were experienced through more traditional channels. Social media has become a part of the way audiences consume and engage with live sports as well as brands and organizations

8. Hockey player gets professional contract by Tweeting

Bissonnette has built an audience of more than 726,000 users on Twitter, and as the NHL opened its free agent season on Friday, he reasserted his command of the medium. At 31, he began the day without a contract, and without word from any team with any interest in signing him.

So he decided to have some fun.
“Phones fully charged,” he wrote. “Still no calls but It’s early.”
A little while later: “This is usually how it goes. All the big dogs go right away. Role players to follow. Not gonna panic. Stay the course.”
- By the end of the day, the Ontario Reign of the AHL and an affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings called his agent and they hashed out a contract.

9.  Snapchat Sees Growth in Sports

Snapchat, once thought of as a platform for teens, is making in roads in sports.....  a few examples of Snapchat being in the news when it comes to sports.

- NBA's Richard Jefferson announces 2-year deal to return to Cavs on Snapchat

- Johnny Manziel's recent Snapchat messages to friends show he's serious about sobriety
- Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis takes over the NFL Snapchat account

Los Angeles 2024 launch social media accounts...
L.A. is bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics and they are taking to social media to stake their claim... Led by their 2024 director of athlete relations, former Gold Medal swimmer, Janet Evans.

Non profits finally getting the hang of social media.... Nonprofits overwhelmingly (88%) said their most important communication tools were email and their websites, even though fully 97% of them are on Facebook. This may have to do with the fact that in their mind, the pinnacle of engagement is a donation (47%) and that happens when someone hits the website.  (74%) use social networks as a megaphone, announcing events and activities and sharing organization-centric info.
