MLB Fans and Ticket Refunds

Major League Baseball announced this week that it reached a deal with the MLB Players Association on a plan to move ahead with a 60-game, coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. But the league still has no plan to refund fans who purchased tickets for games that may not be played as scheduled this season, played with fans—or played at all.

In response to Milberg Phillips Grossman filing a class action lawsuit against MLB in April over the league's directive not to issue refunds, the league directed its 30 clubs to develop their own ticket refund polices for games already postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, opting against a league-wide policy. Some teams have offered refunds and credits for games through June, and others are offering credits toward 2021 regular season games in exchange for canceled 2020 games. At least one team—the Rangers—will allow anyone with tickets from the original 2020 schedule to get a refund.

Without a clear league policy to immediately refund all ticket purchases for every 2020 game for every team, however, fans are left with more questions than answers at a time when many are already dealing with huge challenges from the pandemic.

"During unprecedented uncertainty and financial hardship, Major League Baseball is playing games with fans," said Milberg's Peggy Wedgworth. "The league's latest announcement does not properly address the issues raised by our lawsuit. We continue to pursue claims on behalf of ticket purchasers who have not received a full refund for the MLB 2020 season. We again emphasize that MLB team owners can do the right thing now and refund the money. It is disappointing that the owners continue to have access to an interest-free loan at the expense of the ticket purchasers."

MLB's proposed 60-game regular season schedule has yet to be finalized. It's also unclear what—if any—the league's policy will be for allowing fans. An agreed-upon 101-page health and safety protocol, which describes hundreds of changes for the 2020 MLB season, mentions the possibility of having fans at games only once. In June, sources told the Dallas Morning News that MLB is "inclined to allow local and municipal governance to take precedence when it comes to allowing fan attendance at games."

Regardless of fan attendance policy, the league is cutting more than 100 games from the 2020 schedule originally released last August. Teams' 60 games are likely to be played against different opponents, on different dates, and in different locations. And with coronavirus cases surging in many states, including among MLB players and staff, fans might opt to stay home no matter how the season unfolds. Nearly 3 in 4 Americans say they would not return to live sporting events before the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight calculates that a canceled season would have meant an estimated $10 billion in revenue loss. In 2019, the average cost for a family of four to attend a game was almost $250. Even without fans at games, MLB owners are projected to bring in $5.4 billion this year.

"Since the season was first postponed in March, Major League Baseball has refused to do right by its fans," said Milberg Phillips Grossman Senior Partner Marc Grossman. "MLB is doing everything it can to salvage the 2020 season and limit its own economic losses, while ignoring losses to fans from ticket sales. Until MLB provides refunds to fans who purchased tickets for the 2020 season, it will hold those fans in limbo."

Online Ticketers Hurting... New Policies

With more than 23,000 live events cancelled and more to come, online ticketing websites are struggling with their business model.

Stubhub announced new policies this morning and the ticket buyer is not going to like them.

Given the impact of the coronavirus, it is not possible to sustain this practice in the near-term. We are facing significant timing delays in recouping funds from the thousands of sellers on our platform, and expect these challenges to continue in the coming months. At the same time, buyers expect immediate refunds. As a result, we’ve enacted new policies in the US and Canada that we believe are clear and fan-first.

Buyer Policies

We understand fans are disappointed and concerned by these large-scale event cancellations. We were the first in our industry to begin offering customers 120% credit for the canceled purchases as a thank you for remaining patient in a very challenging period. In the first two weeks of offering this option, approximately 70% of customers opted to receive this additional future value. Recently, we announced this as our standard policy for canceled events, with refunds available in jurisdictions where they are required. Coupons can be applied to one or multiple StubHub orders in the same currency. If your order is less than your coupon value, you can use the remainder on another event.

Seller Policies

Meanwhile, sellers on our platform also face challenges. Music and sports fans, season ticket holders, and business sellers are unclear if teams and primary ticketing companies are providing credits or refunds for the tickets they had previously bought and subsequently sold on StubHub. We are working with the thousands of sellers across our platform to understand options and timing for repayment to us for tickets of canceled events. NFL Launches 'Tickets for 100 Years' Contest

Fans, players, legends, clubs and communities to come together for seriesof #NFL100 events, initiatives, and programming through Super Bowl LIV.
As the National Football League rewards and honors fans in its centennial season, the League today announced the launch of "Tickets for 100 Years," a first-of-its-kind contest offering a grand prize of a pair of season tickets to the winning fan's preferred franchise for the next century.
This grand prize is the first of a series of incredible fan experiences NFL fans will be able enter to win throughout the league's 100th season, following the launch of the NFL100 campaign during Super Bowl LIII. These experiences officially kick off during the 2019 NFL Draft and continue through the first game of the League's 100th season – before culminating at Super Bowl LIV (Feb. 2, 2020) in Miami.
"The NFL was built on multi-generational fandom that bonds people together," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "Giving someone a century's worth of NFL season tickets may be the single greatest sports prize ever offered to a fan. It represents 100 years filled with incredible memories to share with the people who matter most. In addition to awarding one winner two tickets for 100 years, the winner can pass the tickets down through future generations while also having access to exclusive team experiences and an NFL Shop lifetime discount. 
To enter fans, should describe how they are their favorite team's biggest fan of the century in a social post tagging @NFL and #NFL100Contest in an Instagram post (picture or video) or Tweet. The winner will be selected based on how effectively and creatively he/or she conveys their ultimate NFL team fandom in their entry post. No purchase is necessary.

Tickets Still Remain for NFL Conference Championships

Great news for fans looking to see the games live - Tickets are still available to this weekends’ games. As of 8:00am PT, the starting price for resale tickets to the NFC Championship are selling for $289 each. The starting price for tickets to the AFC Championship are selling for $173 each.  As a reminder, Ticketmaster is the only ticketing platform that can guarantee that the game ticket and seat you buy is the ticket and seat you’ll get.
