120 Mile Long Traffic Jam in Russia

Doesn't make sitting for 15 minutes in rush hour traffic so bad.

A massive queue of traffic north of Moscow has left some drivers stranded for up to three days in sub-zero temperatures.

Tens of thousands of vehicles have been stuck - some for three days - in a huge traffic jam on a motorway northwest of Moscow.

The length of the queue on the M-10 highway was put at up to 120 miles.

The cause of the jam is said to be heavy snow.

Carmageddon Hits L.A.

California officials have no idea what really will transpire when a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles is shut down for 53 hours starting tonight for a road-improvement project in the ultra-busy Sepulveda Pass in the heart of one of the most car-centric cultures in the world.  It's being called "Carmageddon."

"Allow me to be blunt: It's going to be a mess out there," Los Angeles Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky posted on his City Hall website.

"For those of you who think you can outsmart this potential mother of all traffic jams," he added, "my advice is simple: save your gas."

If you don't kow, th 405 is one of the main traffic arteries in Los Angeles. The affected stretch, running from Interstate 10, the Santa Monica Freeway, to Highway 101, the Ventura Freeway, is traveled by an estimated 500,000 vehicles on a typical weekend, including plenty driven by Bay Area residents heading into Dodger territory for vacation.

There are no alternative routes nearby that can handle the anticipated overflow, prompting state and regional transportation officials to warn of severe, multihour delays, above and beyond the usual hair-pulling, steering wheel-pounding congestion for which Los Angeles is famous.

Stay off the roads in SoCal.

Huge Chinese Traffic Jam Goes On and On and On and...

Thousands of vehicles were still stuck Monday in a more than 62-mile traffic jam leading to Beijing that has lasted nine days and highlights China's growing road congestion woes.

The Beijing-Tibet expressway slowed to a crawl on August 14 due to a spike in traffic by cargo-bearing heavy trucks heading to the capital, and compounded by road maintenance work that began five days later, the Global Times said.

The state-run newspaper said the jam between Beijing and Jining city had given birth to a mini-economy with local merchants capitalising on the stranded drivers' predicament by selling them water and food at inflated prices.

That stretch of highway linking Beijing with the northern province of Hebei and the Inner Mongolia region has become increasingly prone to massive jams as the capital of more than 20 million people sucks in huge shipments of goods.

The latest clog has been worsened by the road improvement project, made necessary by highway damage caused by a steady increase in cargo traffic, the Global Times said.

China has embarked in recent years on a huge expansion of its national road system but soaring traffic periodically overwhelms the grid.

The congestion was expected to last into mid-September...What!
