Female Journalist Denied Access at Masters

Tara Sullivan, a sports columnist for the The Record of Bergen County, N.J., was denied access to a locker room where interviews were taking place at Augusta National after the completion of the Masters on Sunday.

Male reporters were allowed to speak with players but security stopped Sullivan at the entrance.

"Bad enough no women members at Augusta. But not allowing me to join writers in locker room interview is just wrong," Sullivan posted on her Twitter feed.  Following that tweet, the Twitter universe lit up with opinions and disbelief.

It's more bad press for a tournament that has come under fire for not having women and enough monoritiy members.

The Record reported that officials later told Sullivan that, "It was a complete misunderstanding by the tournament week security and you should have rightfully been given access per the standard practices of major sporting events."

Augusta National spokesman Steve Ethun said the guard acted improperly in stopping Sullivan, since club policy is to provide equal access to all reporters. The club has no female members, but several female reporters at the tournament confirmed they had made numerous trips to the locker room for interviews in the past without incident.

Sullivan was among a crowd of reporters following third-round leader Rory McIlroy from the course into the clubhouse after his collapse in the final round.

"He just said women were not allowed and there was no official in sight," Sullivan said. By the time she located McIlroy's manager, the interview had been completed.

Ethun said the club hires a number of people to work the tournament and the guard was apparently unaware of the equal-access policy.

"It should not have happened," he said. "We will work as hard as we can to make sure it does not happen again."

Twitter Ends Quickbar Experiment

Twitter has removed the QuickBar from its iPhone app, to the delight of a loud and passionate group of grumblers on the Web who bestowed it with another name that we can't publish here.

At the beginning of the month, Twitter updated its iPhone app so that its QuickBar, a small black strip across the top of a user's Twitter feed, would drop down and display what's trending on the microblogging service or show ads.

Well, the QuickBar totally never took hold. In fact, a lot of people were irritated by it giving the bar any number of nicknames across the Internet.

On Thursday, Twitter retreated from its QuickBar, removing it from the iPhone app and issuing a "mea culpa" of sorts to its users.

"The QuickBar was originally conceived to help users discover what's happening in the broader world beyond people they already follow," Twitter Creative Director Doug Bowman wrote in a blog post. "The bar was also seen as a potential means of in-app notifications for new @mentions, DMs, and other important activity."

We'll have to wait and see what Twitter comes up with next.

Ochocinco Fined $25,000 for using Twitter During Game

Fining Bengals's WR Chad Ochocinco isn't going to stop him from doing what he wants to do.

According to NFL.com, No. 85 was fined $25,000 for 1) having an electronic device on the sideline and 2) posting to a social media site during the Bengals' preseason win over the Eagles last week ... making his experience from the game just a bit more painful that it already was.

League policy prohibits players from using sites such as Twitter and Facebook 90 minutes before kickoff up until the conclusion of postgame media sessions.

Ochocinco tweeted the following during the verboten times (kickoff was at 8:07 p.m.):

"Just talk with Kelly Washington , Desean Jackson, Geoff Pope, Hank Baskett and I caught a ball from Mike Vick, I love prw-game warm up" (6:50 p.m.)

"Man Im sick of getting hit like that , its the damn preseason (expletive)! 1day I'm gone jump up and start throwing hay makers" (9:53 p.m.)

The second tweet occurred shortly after Ochocinco was leveled while running a pass pattern in the middle of the field.

Ochocinco has more than 1 million followers on Twitter.
