Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 and iHeartRadio - Go Big with Monitors and TVs

The bigger the display, the better.

When it comes to computer monitors, TVs etc..

Rick and Sully discuss. What to look for in your next monitor or TV purchase.

1.  Go big or go home

Like TVs, display screens have seen a growth spurt. Just a few years ago, the 19-inch display was the benchmark. Many flat-panel displays are now 22-inches or larger, while curved displays increase your field of vision and make the most of all available screen space. These larger displays allow you to view multiple windows and documents at once, replacing the need for multiple monitors at one desk. That way, you get more screen real estate and more desk space to boot.

2.  Higher Resolution

The increased pixel density in 4k and 5k resolution displays allow us to work with more detail (good for coders), sharper image quality (good for photo editors), and high-definition video (good for streamers), while also reducing eye strain (good for all of us).

3.  Wider Aspect Ratio

Displays can be measured several ways, one of which is aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of the width of the image to its height. The square 4:3 aspect ratio used to be the desktop display standard; and while the widescreen 16:9 has been the norm for several years, curved 21:9 formats are now on the market. Benefits of wider aspect ratio include a high degree of image detail for graphics editing, and a unique immersive gaming experience, to name two.

4. More Versatile

And Improved collaboration: We share with local and global colleagues more than ever before, so staying connected requires evolving how we collaborate. Whether you're conferencing at your desk or in a huddle room, displays like the Skype for Business-certified HP EliteDisplay E240c and HP EliteDisplay S340c Curved Monitor make meetings more manageable and productive.

5. Easier on your body

If your head and neck aren't comfortable while working in front of a PC, chances are you're not doing your best work. New displays are designed with your well-being in mind. Pivot rotation allows you to configure multiple displays to best fit the shape of your workstation. Pro tip: For eye comfort, position your display 18"–28" away, adjust it to the right height, and take visual breaks.

6. Our new montors and TVs today have more options...

Today's displays include a diverse assortment of ports—VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C. These added connectors help us do more, from supporting our video and audio needs to fast power delivery over USB connections.

Have a great Easter!

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - Protecting Holiday Packages

Rick and Sully are making sure you get those packages delivered to your front door.

It's the holiday shopping season and a big deal for all of us shoppers. It’s also kind of a big deal for the mail industry. With online purchases increasing every year and all those letters to Santa going all the way to the North Pole, it can get a bit crazy at the post office; in fact FedEx predicts that just between December 1st and 7th they’ll make over 85 million shipments and that’s not including all the other boxes and large envelopes that will be shipped on or before December 24. With all that mail being sent about, it’s important to keep a watchful eye out for any important mail or packages because as shipments increase so do the opportunities for porch poachers to swipe your shiny new gadgets and tech, so here are some times for keeping tabs of your holiday package shipments and deliveries.

Have a listen:

1.  Track it

Using online tracking is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to keep an eye on any shipment. Most websites even include a specified time of drop off rather than just the day and will also notify you of any delays or if the item is being held at a local facility for pickup.

2.  Ask a Friend or Neighbor or Leave a Note

If you know you’ll either be out of the house or on vacation at the time of a scheduled delivery, a neighbor or friend can be a powerful ally in the fight against package thievery. Have your friend either pick it up and hold it for you or put it in a special hiding spot.
A good trick is to simply leave a note for the delivery man with instructions to either hide it somewhere specific or even leave it at a neighbor’s house.

3.  Require a Signature

Requiring a signature guarantees nothing will be left out in the open; the delivery man will leave a note saying they attempted to deliver so that you can choose whether to have them try again or pick it up from the specified location.

4.  Add a Wi-Fi Camera - D-Link DCS-2330L

If you have security cameras at home or have been having problems with package thieves, setting up a camera like one of D-Link’s Wi-Fi Cameras facing your door or walkway can help track any deliveries or activity. You can view the live feed anywhere with the mydlink app or record the feed using a micro SD card to view later.

5. Know the Minute it Arrives

A great feature on several D-Link cameras is the motion and sound detection capability which can be configured to notify you via email or text any time one of your pre-set alerts is triggered. In the camera settings you can set up motion detection and pinpoint the specific area you want to track movement. You can also set it up to send a snapshot or video clip notification whenever motion is detected. When setting the sound detection, you are able to set the volume level for which you want to be notified if exceeded.

 6. Gate Smart Lock

With a Gate, you can see who is at your door through a motion-activated camera. You can also talk to the person at the door and remotely lock/unlock it through your mobile phone. Gate was fully funded on Indigogo.

** Make sure when sending out packages that you have the correct address and pack your boxes well.

4.  Fireplace Safety Screen

Fireplaces and other hearth products are beautiful, functional additions to any home, but they can pose a risk when not used and attended to with proper vigilance.

Ensure that a safety screen is securely in place when your hearth is in operation to reduce the risk of potential burns, especially when children are present.

5.  Carbon Monoxide Monitor

* Home Alert makes one for $44

Carbon monoxide detectors are a lot like smoke detectors, but instead of looking for signs of fire, they detect levels of carbon monoxide. Depending on the brand, detectors operate in one of three ways: with a biomimetic sensor, metal oxide semiconductor, or electrochemical sensor.
Biometric sensors use gels that change color after absorbing a certain amount of carbon monoxide. Metal oxide semiconductors have silica chips that send electrical signals to trigger an alarm. Electrochemical sensors are considered to be the best in the industry. They use chemical solutions and electrodes that release currents to sound an alarm.

You'll want to install carbon monoxide detectors like smoke detectors—on every level of your home. For areas with more carbon monoxide producing appliances, like your kitchen, garage, and basement, you should install multiple detectors.

6.  Screentime App

www.screentimelabs.com

The Screen Time app—built for parents by parents and born out of one father’s struggle witnessing his eldest son develop an unhealthy attachment to technology—is designed to help people manage their kids’ screen time to ensure they are enjoying the benefits of tech in balance with offline socialization, activities and adventures.
Yet many parents have not considered what impact the new devices will have on their children’s lifestyle balance. While technology has benefits—from developing language skills to learning enhancements—too much of it can have adverse effects on kids, contributing to behavioral issues, obesity, sleep irregularity and more.
American Academy of Pediatrics Screen Time Recommendations: only video-chatting for children under 18 months; only high-quality programming for toddlers 18-24 months with parental co-viewing; no more than one hour of supervised screen time per day for kids ages 2 to 5; and consistent limits for youth over age 6—and yet many children are logging up to seven hours of screen time per day, including TV, tablets, smart phones, computers and other devices (read more here and here).

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - OKC and RiverSport Rapids

Rick is in Oklahoma City for the opening of the new RiverSport Rapids...  Oklahoma City’s new $45.2 million whitewater rafting and kayaking center. Geared for both family fun and elite athlete training, the 11-acre RIVERSPORT Rapids whitewater center was completed as part of MAPS 3, the one-cent sales tax initiative dedicated to metro area projects.

Recirculating channels pumping treated water create class II-IV rapids and offer a range of experiences for whitewater rafting, tubing, kayaking and canoeing.

The lower flow channel offers great family rafting and tubing experiences – no previous experience necessary.
High-octane Class IV rapids on the Olympic style course will challenge elite athletes from around the world for both training and competition.

The course is being used to qualify for the U.S. Olympic canoe/kayak slalom team.
And follow @VisitOKC on Twitter and have a listen:

Rick and Sully also talk about some other new Olympic technology to be on the lookout before and during the Rio 2016 Games.

1.  The High Tech Suits the US Track and Field Team will be Wearing from Nike

Nike has consulted with its athletes and designers and tested its products in labs to provide the best performance results possible with the hopes of its athletes bringing home medals at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

From Nike: "The uniforms are not smooth. It has texture, too. It’s kind of the same approach where we create mini turbulences and air channels to propel the athlete forward. At the fastest moving parts of the body—the forearms and legs—you’ll see the highest concentration of those aeroblades.”

2. NBC to Stream more than 6000 hours of content from the Games

The cable and media giant will relay 1,500 hours of content on 11 of NBCUniversal's television networks such as Bravo and NBC, in addition to 4,500 hours online on its NBC Sports Live Extra mobile app and website, which will also be made available on in its X1 video service.

Due to the short time zone difference between Brazil and the United States, the Rio games will feature more live events such as track and field and swimming than the games in London, over 17 consecutive nights in August.

3. Snapchat and the Olympics

The Olympics are coming to Snapchat. The app scored a deal with Comcast Corp.’s NBC to show highlights from the 2016 Summer Games, the first time the U.S. network has agreed to share video of the sporting contest.

Snapchat Inc. will set up a dedicated channel on the mobile app for the games in Rio De Janeiro. Media company BuzzFeed will curate short clips and behind-the-scenes content into a Discover channel on the app for two weeks, while Snapchat creates daily “live stories” using content from NBC, athletes and sports fans at the scene.

4. Google to Offer Enhanced Maps of Olympic Venues

Besides plenty of local visitors, the International Olympic Committee predicts at least half a million people from overseas will descend on Rio de Janeiro for the Games in August.

No doubt lots of them will be carrying smartphones, probably loaded with Google Maps, an app certain to be indispensable in the new and busy surroundings.

Google is keen to make its maps offering as useful as possible for those heading to the Olympics, this week rolling out updated maps for 25 official indoor venues as well as enhanced maps for 12 official outdoor venues for the Games. The new content comes just a few weeks after the app introduced real-time transit information for the Brazilian host city.

To access the new content, open Google Maps on your computer or mobile device, search for an Olympic venue, zoom into it and then click or tap on it.

- Rick continues his excursion to Oklahoma City, he will be going down the rapids, and ie heading to Micky Mantle's Steakhouse and a Oklahoma City Dodgers minor leage baseball game tonight.
