Happy Valentine's Day!

February 14th is Valentine's Day.

Valentine’s Day is named in honor of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of lovers who, it is believed, was murdered on Feb. 14 AD 270. During that time, the Roman emperor Claudius II cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome, as he was having a hard time getting men to join the military, and he believed married men, being emotionally attached to their wives and families, did not make good soldiers.

However, Valentine secretly married couples until he was caught, then, refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs, was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and have his head cut off.

One legend suggests he left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter before his death which said “Love from your Valentine,” the first Valentine’s card.

It was the Pope who set aside Feb. 14 to honour St. Valentine in AD 496. However, the day was not often celebrated until the Middle Ages. Gift giving and exchanging of hand-made cards became common in England around the 18th century, while in the 1840s the holiday caught on in the United States.

Today, approximately one-fourth of all the cards sent in a year are sent on Valentine’s Day. But while the day is about love, cards, chocolates and flowers in The U.S. and Canada, the day is celebrated differently around the world.

RickLimpert.info Picture of the Week:  Freedom?

Egypt celebrates, but what is next?

President Obama delivered a speech about Egypt calling for "nothing less than genuine democracy," not just a government aligned with U.S. interests.

It wil sure be interesting to see what happens in Egypt over the next few months.

Ft. Wayne, Indiana May Not Name Building after Former Mayor, Harry Baals

Ft. Wayne, IN thought is was doing the right thing by inviting residents to vote in an online poll to select who the new City/County building will be names after.

It got more than it bargained for.

This news segment from local Ft. Wayne news tells it all.  As a bonus pay close attention to the name of the guy that finished second in the voting, and I have to ask myself, were Ft. Wayne's residents serious or having a little fun with this "pole".

Groupon's FTD Deal Not What it Seemed

Groupon has cancelled an coupon offering half off of $40 of flowers and gifts from FTD after users complained that the deal wasn't actually a deal at all.

About 3,300 people bought the coupon before Groupon cancelled it. Buyers were directed to a special Web site set up for the offer, FTD.com/Groupon, but they said that prices on the sale site were actually higher than they are on FTD's regular site. Others were upset by the fact that flowers wouldn't be delivered earlier than Feb. 15, the day after Valentine's Day.

In response, Groupon shut the deal down a day early. FTD has changed the terms of the coupon, allowing customers to combine the coupon with other discounts on its site. For the customers that already signed up for the deal, FTD will refund the difference of the purchase.

FTD has a hotline set up to handle the Groupon customers' concerns: 855-645-6214 Groupon has said that customers can request a refund or credit by emailing support@groupon.com.
