Prom Picture of the Week  #1

Where I live, the prom season is in full swing.  What a way to end your high school years by attending the prom.  A dinner, a dance, and whatever else...

I never went to a prom, so I was never able to have a Kodak moment like this.

I don't know which girl was this dude's date, it might be the girl in the pink.  I do like his white blazer and his dad did a great job tying his tye.  I also wonder if the girl in the red got lucky that night.

Kindle Pick of the Week: Text Me if You're Breathing

Not a free pick this week, but worth the $5.00 or so you will spend for this Kindle book.

My buddy and Chicago-based comedian Greg Schwem has a new book out.  If you aren't familiar with Greg's work, he's a stand up, but he's so much more.

He used to be a TV news reporter, but then he saw the light and became a comic.  He's also a pretty darn good tennis player.  For years he worked Vegas, comedy clubs and cruise ships.

He now is an in demand speaker and host at corporate events all over the country.  He still hones his act at clubs, but if your business is looking for a host or entertainment for a corporate event, book Greg!

He's also now an author, and this book is timely and is something all us guys can relate to.

Here's the synopsis:

What does a dad do when his daughter asks Santa for a Wii Fit and a 4G iPhone?  The answer is simple:  laugh!  In Text Me If You're Breathing, stand-up comedian and technically challenged dad Greg Schwem accounts his mishaps and struggles with parenting in today's digital world.  Whether accompanying his daughter to the New York City Apple store, purchasing a "high-tech" swing set, "tweeting" while coaching Little League or trying to lay down cell phone rules, Schwem shows readers that technology, while complicated, can be hilarious.  Along the way Schwem also aims his barbs at Tiger Woods, the Consumer Electronics Show, in vitro fertilization, the National Spelling Bee and the movie Avatar.  Insightful, heartfelt and always funny, Text Me If You're Breathing is proof that parenting will never come with technical support.

It's too bad this book came out before Charlie Sheen took over the internet and the world, because Greg would've had a field day with him.

If you are a gadget hound, you probably have a Kindle or iPad with the Kindle app.  Download this book and keep it handy.  You will find it hard to stop turning the digital pages, or you can read it in parts whenever you are stuck in line at the DMV or at your daughter's gymnastics practice.

Here's the link to download it.  Remember Greg's daughters are quickly approaching college age and they may want to follow his footsteps to Northwestern, so he needs to sell a bunch of copies.

Air Traffic Controller Falls Asleep

And you too can listen live.

I have to admit, I have the LIVEATC app for my iPad so I can listen to air traffic controllers and pilots as they fly into and out of various airports.

If I would've been listening to the feed coming from Washinton Reagan in the wee hours of Wednesday morning I would've caught this...

A veteran air traffic controller who was staffing the tower at Washington Reagan National Airport early Wednesday has admitted he was napping when two airplanes tried unsuccessfully to contact the tower.

One plane was able to talk with a regional controller and pulled the jet from 400 feet to 1,000 feet, circling the airport before landing safely a few minutes past midnight. Around that time, another aircraft from Chicago was coming into range.

Click here to find out more!

While the airport usually has two traffic controllers working during the day, only one controller works the overnight shift. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to add a second controller to midnight traffic at Reagan. "It is not acceptable to have just one controller in the tower managing air traffic in this critical air space," he said.  The incident at Reagan garnered national attention because it is located just a few miles from the Pentagon, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol.

It's a great app, and you can listen to airports all over the world.  Too bad I never get to hear anything that interesting.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: Divine

The #1 free book in the Kindle Store.

Best-selling author Karen Kingsbury weaves another dramatic story of tragedy and redemption!

Mary Madison was a child of unspeakable horrors, a young woman society wanted to forget. Now a divine power has set Mary free to bring life-changing hope and love to battered and abused women living in the shadow of the nation's capital.

Mary is educated and redeemed, a powerful voice in Washington, D.C.—both to the politically elite and to other women like her. But she also has a past that shamed polite society. Her experiences created in her paralyzing fear, faithlessness, addiction, and promiscuity. At the crossroads of her life, only one power set Mary free and gave her a lifetime of love and hope. A power that could only be divine.
