RIM Ordered to Pay Up

Can RIM recover from this?

A federal jury in San Francisco has found Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) liable for $147.2 million in damages for infringing on patents held by Mformation Technologies Inc.

Mformation, of Edison, N.J., sued Research in Motion in October 2008, alleging that Canada-based RIM infringed on its 1999 invention for remotely managing wireless devices. Mformation’s software allows companies to remotely access employee cell phones to do software upgrades, change passwords or to wipe data from phones that have been stolen.

Officials at RIM, which has been struggling with plummeting sales, a declining stock and other problems, did not provide a comment Saturday.

Thakur said the jury ruled that Research in Motion should pay his client $8 for each of the 18.4 million Blackberrys that were connected to the Blackberry Enterprise Server, from the day the lawsuit was filed until the time of the trial. That’s a total of $147.2 million.

This is a huge hit for RIM.

Dolphins on 'Hard Knocks'

HBO has found their victim.

After looking at many different teams, HBO announced Tuesday that the Dolphins would be the newest subject of its popular reality series documenting NFL training camps. The seventh season premieres Aug. 7, with four more one-hour episodes airing on subsequent Tuesdays.

Coming off a 6-10 season, Miami has a new coach in Joe Philbin and many new players.

What does this mean for football fans?

We'll learn more about the Miami Dolphins than we ever cared to know and we'll probably have ample opportunity to catch glimpses of Dolphin's QB Ryan Tannehill's wife.

''Hard Knocks'' was not produced last year because of the NFL lockout.

Nokia Wows Mobile World Congress With a 41-Megapixel Phone Camera

Looking to go where no Android or iPhone has gone before, Nokia has unveiled two new mobile phones that it hopes will revive its fortunes at the start of the world's largest mobile phone trade show on Monday, including one with an amazing 41-megapixel camera.

Nokia Chief executive Stephen Elop told reporters at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that the new phones -- a low-price $250 smartphone that runs the Windows Phone operating system and the PureView 808 which sports the staggeringly high-resolution 41-megapixel camera -- demonstrates "the actions necessary to improve the fortunes of Nokia."

The Finnish company is attempting a comeback of sorts with smartphones using Microsoft's Windows software.

And 41-megapixel phones.  Now if I could just get my smartphone camera to focus properly.

What to Watch for at CES 2012

This week, more than 2,700 exhibitors will fill more than 3.2 million square feet of space in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is now the place to be, whether you are in the tech industry or not.

It's so big, it's hard to cover the whole show.  Let's take a look at a few of the things to watch for at CES 2012.

Security Cameras

Look for Wi-Fi security cameras to make a little splash.  They will be affordable and with night vision they will be able to view up to 30 or so feet in the dark of night.  You might want to think about this for your home or place of business in 2012.

Fitness Gadgets

Should be huge around the convention floor this year.  It doesn't matter which sport you favor, by the end of 2012 there should be some sort of gadget or app for you.

Tablets and Accessories

Who won't have a tablet to show off this week?  That should be the question.  Look for tablets galore and the stuff you buy to go along with them.

Different Looking DSLRs

They will be point and shoot looking camera with interchangeable lenses.  Camera like Sony's NEX-7 will shoot like DSLRs, but be marketed to prosumers.

Wireless Headphones

The era of Bluetooth wireless headphone has arrived.  We'll see how good they perform.

Microsoft's Swan Song

It's the end of an era as Microsoft has said this will be the last CES it will exhibit at.

OLED

You will be hearing a lot about OLED technology.  Televisions, tablets and phones will all be featuring OLED technology.  I love OLED screens and look forward to seeing how they look.

Ultrabooks

Ultra-thin laptops will be everywhere in 2011.  Inspired by Apple's MacBook Airs, Lenovo and others will be debuting ultrabooks at the show.

Justin Bieber

Last year it was Lady Gaga, this year, Justin Bieber will be at CES Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to promote the Vietnamese robotics company TOSY.  Other celebs rumored to be in attendance, LL Cool J, 50 Cent and ESPN talker Colin Cowherd.
