Converation Corner: Debating the Debates

The debates are over as the Presidential election is in its stretch drive. Millions and millions of people watched the three Presidential Debates. But does it matter.

It is important for citizens to see candidates in a head to head discussion; however, does the content and context ever relate to the important issues and needs of our country?  Over the decades, political debates have become more of a place of continual personal attacks rather than substance and discussion.  Moderators own a large piece of the content when controlling a debate, but how do they do? Are they bias?  Are they fair?  Steve and Rick discuss and provide their opinion on the political debate process and its effects.

Converation Corner: Author of 'Broken Promises' Nick Nichols

Author and lawyer, Nick Nichols joined Steve and I on Conversation Corner this week.

Nick's first novel is Broken Promises.

If you like legal thrillers that are edgy and gripping, then you will love Broken Promises. In this novel, break-out author, Nick Nichols, a long-time family law attorney, tackles all the spicy issues of divorce: adultery, addiction, power, and greed. The lead character’s error in judgment, namely, sleeping with his client, took him down a path that spiraled down into an abyss. The book serves as a cautionary tale for lawyers who might be similarly tempted.

Nick Nichols has seen it all when it comes to family legal issues and he does more than a “drive by” of a number of these from not only a lawyer’s perspective, but also the reader’s perspective. At some point, we’ve all had dealings with lawyers that included many twists and turns. This book will either open some memories or expose the reader to a new situation or set of emotions. Nichols does a great job with character development while bringing the plot to a carefully executed ending. A great end of summer read that does not disappoint. I’m looking forward to Nichols’ next effort.

Conversation Corner: Cheerwine and An American Success Story

In a sea of soft drink “Goliaths,” Cheerwine® is a “David.”  The 99-year-old independent family-owned soft drink based in Salisbury, North Carolina is making waves among those who cherish the South thanks to its branded entertainment web series, “The Local Legend Project.”  Last summer, Cheerwine’s Bo Stevenson (with the help of fans) set out on a mission to visit and meet legendary people and places across the American South and give them a national platform for sharing their stories.

I talk with Bo about Cheerwine and the 99 years of success on "Conversation Corner" this week.
