Kindle Free Pick of the Week: A Little Death In Dixie

It's by Lisa Turner, and it's free in the Kindle Store this week.

The Blues were born out of need, anger and pride. Murder comes from those same dark places. Memphis has both. One of Memphis' most seductive and notorious socialites has vanished. Either she's off on another drunken escapade or the disappearance is something much more frightening. What begins as an ordinary day's work for Detective Billy Able quickly grows into a complex spider's web of tragedy, mystery, suspicion, and sordid secrets including a few of Billy's own. With the help of Mercy Snow, the estranged sister of the missing socialite, Billy follows a twisted trail of human frailty and corruption to disturbing truths that undermine everything he thought he knew about himself and the people he loves.

A mystery that will suck you right in.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: New Kindle Apps

The first apps for the Kindle are a couple of games: Every Word and Shuffled Row.

Every Word - Test your vocabulary as you try to find as many words from the scrambled letters in this fun and fast-paced word game.

Here's how it works. You are given six or seven scrambled letters with the goal of finding as many words as you can. You score points by filling out the words in each empty spot on the board using only the letters that appear at the top of the game board. Keep at it until time runs out or until you fill up the board. The more words you make, the higher your score!

Shufled Row - See how many words you can make from 60 lettered tiles.

The tiles are added to your row one at a time so you'll constantly be working with a new set of letters. After you submit a word, the letters you used will be removed and new ones will be added. Increase your score by using less common letters. Create longer words and increase your score even more.

If you don't use the letters fast enough, they'll disappear and new ones will take their place, so you'll have to decide if you want to play it safe and use short words or try to wait for more letters to form longer words.

These are the first of I'm sure many more apps to come for your Kindle.  They are tops in the Kindle Store now, get them. and try them for free.

Amazon Opens UK Kindle Store

Amazon has launched its UK Kindle store, with its bestselling e-book, Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Played with Fire, on sale at £2.70, 66% off its list price.

Customers will have to wait until August 27th before Amazon.co.uk starts shipping its new Kindle models in the UK, the e-book store launched this week with more than 400,000 titles available.

The list includes 84 of the Nielsen top 100 bestsellers with only books with heavily illustrated content unavailable.

Andrew Wylie's controversial Odyssey Editions, which the agent is selling directly through Amazon without a publisher, are also on sale. Norman Mailer's The Naked and The Dead is on sale at £4.74 and Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita for £4.84.

The price of The Girl Who Played With Fire contrasts sharply with that of its competitors. At Waterstone's, the same e-book is on sale at £5.49 and at £5.19 at WH Smith. The book is not available at the Apple iBookstore.

If a customer has pre-ordered a Kindle and buys Kindle books between now and when it ships, the titles will already be preloaded on the device.

Greg Greeley, Amazon vice-president for European retail, said: "Amazon.co.uk has been a destination for millions of book customers since 1998 and our new Kindle Store introduces another way for passionate readers to take full advantage of our vast selection and great prices.

"The opening of the UK Kindle store allows customers to buy content in pound sterling and offers a
great shopping experience including UK customer reviews, recommendations, bestseller lists and customer service."

More growth and exposure for the Kindle and Amazon.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: Face of Betrayal

A book by frequent Fox News contributor Lis Wiehl.

Wiehl, a Fox News commentator and legal analyst, teams with mystery veteran Henry (Buried Diamonds) on a sizzling political thriller. When 17-year-old Senate page Katie Converse goes missing on her Christmas break near her parents' white Victorian home in Portland, Ore., law enforcement and media personnel go into overdrive in a search for clues. Three friends at the pinnacle of their respective careers—Allison Pierce, a federal prosecutor; Cassidy Shaw, a crime reporter; and Nicole Hedges, an FBI special agent—soon discover that Katie wasn't the picture of innocence painted by her parents. It appears Katie was having an affair with a much older man, a senator whose political career could be derailed if the affair was publicized. The seamless plot offers a plethora of twists and turns. A blurb from Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly will help draw attention to Wiehl's debut.

Free right now in the Kindle Store.
