A Nook that Glows

Barnes & Noble Inc., the largest U.S. bookstore chain, introduced a Nook e-reader with a screen that glows in the dark, challenging Amazon.com Inc. at a time when prices for digital books may soon start falling.

Both companies have touted page turn speeds, battery life and weight to attract customers. Now Barnes & Noble has added an adjustable light to the screen on its Nook Simple Touch. That’s easier than connecting a light to Amazon’s Kindle Touch, which can’t light up, and offers benefits such as helping a wife keep reading in bed while her husband sleeps, said Chief Executive Officer William Lynch.
A good idea, but the Nook trails the Kindle platform in sales and how it is perceived by the public.

Barnes & Noble, based in New York was best known for it's retail stores, has anchored its future to the fast-growing digital book market by investing in the Nook at the expense of profits as more readers adopt the technology. Less than three years after introducing the Nook.

Bad Tuna in 20 States

A yellowfin tuna product used to make dishes like sushi and sashimi sold at restaurants and grocery stores has been linked with an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened more than 100 people in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

The Food and Drug Administration reported Friday that 116 illnesses have been reported so far, including 12 people who have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Moon Marine USA Corp. of Cupertino, Calif, also known as MMI, is voluntarily recalling 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna. It was labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA when it was sold to grocery stores and restaurants and is scraped off the fish bones and looks like a ground product.

There's a Tsunami Coming; Order Some KFC Now!

The KFC drive thru has long been a popular destination for those looking to pick up a quick meal to eat in a hurry or when emergency hunger hits.  

But how about during a real emergency?

KFC has apologized for a Facebook message that urged people to rush home during Wednesday's tsunami scare in Thailand and order a bucket of chicken.

As people were being urged to evacuate beach areas, the company posted: "Let's hurry home and follow the earthquake news. And don't forget to order your favourite KFC menu."

It prompted hundreds of angry comments on Thai websites denouncing the company as insensitive, selfish and greedy.

By today the message was removed and replaced by one that asked for forgiveness.

If anyone is heading to my local KFC, I'll have some "extra crispy."

Failure to Launch

North Korea launched a long-range rocket on Friday, but it broke apart before escaping the earth's atmosphere and fell into the sea.

The launch drew condemnation from United States and other countries in the region, as well as an unusual admission of failure from Pyongyang, which had invited in journalists and space experts from around the world for the occasion.

In a break from previous practice, the North Korean state media announced that the rocket had not managed to put the satellite into orbit. In the past, North Korea has insisted that failed launches have been successful.

"Scientists, technicians and experts are now looking into the cause of the failure," the official Korean Central News Agency said in a report, which was also read out in a news broadcast on state-run television.

Earlier this week, state media had heralded the launch as "an inspiring deed and an event of historic significance of the nation as it demonstrates the leaping development of space science and technology of the country."

South Korea, which has criticized the launch as a "grave provocation," said it was searching the waters near where the rocket fell for debris -- a chance to gain insights into the North's technology.
