Yes there is a tournament on red clay this week, and yes there are players from the likes of Colombia, Italy, Argentina and Brazil making their way through the draw.
That brings us to an intriguing matchup between two 23-year olds that have never played before.
Fabio Fognini of Italy and Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. Should be a close match on clay as Fognini should be able to neutralize some of the game of the higher ranked Bellucci.
I have picked Bellucci to be my surprise player of 2011, and I think he comes through in this match at the Movistar Open in Santiago Chile.
In what could be a preview of the Western Conference Finals is on the slate Thursday when the Los Angeles Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs. The Lakers are the defending NBA champions and have the second-best record in the conference. San Antonio has had the best record in the league for most of the season.
The Lakers are giving San Antonio 3.5 points. This looks taylor-made for a Spurs lock tonight.
The Spurs defeated the Lakers 97-82 on Dec. 28 in San Antonio. They also are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
The Lakers on the other hand, are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite.
Take the Spurs tonite and you'll be counting your winnings in the morning.
With all the Green Bay Packer and Super Bowl excitement, I neglected to get part 2 of my iPad stand review out for GZ Tablet Stand's new and improved iPad stand.
As you can see, their new iPad stand has the speaker placed in the rear of the stand and it is actually anchored by a small magnet.
The original stand had the speaker in from of the iPad screen, making it difficult to reach over and touch the iPad's screen.
Notice the speaker placed behind where the iPad will sit on the stand.
The iPad rests nicely in its slot and the same great sound coming out of the Altec speaker can be heard anywhere in the room.
Get this handy and attractive stand from GZ Tablet Stands.
There were available on Ebay, but now they are on Etsy at
I wish they had a better name for the Phoenix Open since it is usually one of the more exciting events each year on the PGA Tour. Actually Waste Management is a great company and a great sponsor that loves having its name on this event. Who can forget Tiger Woods' ace at the little par-3 16th in 1997 and the crowd reaction that ensued. This tournament is one big party.
Last year, Hunter Mahan, shot a 6 - under 65 on Sunday to win by one stroke over Rickie Fowler. Fans were on the edge of their seats watching that finish.
A good field is present this year in Phoenix. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy and possible the hottest player on tour and the best story so far in 2011, Jhonattan Vegas are all slated to play in Phoenix.
The course is the TPC of Scottsdale, and with the stadium seating on the 16th and the tough dramatic finishing hole in the 18th, the cream usually rises to the top in the desert.
Buy
Phil Mickelson (A) A strong start to the season for Phil at Torrey Pines. A second place finish will give him a lot of confidence this Spring. Phil is a two-time winner here in 1996 and 2005. He might be a 3-time winner after this weekend.
Dustin Johnson (A) Two top-10 finishes already this year. He's a force every time he tees it up.
Jhonattan Vegas (C) - I'm turning into a believer, Vegas is hot and you might want to ride the hot player. He's playing out of this world golf.
Bill Haas (B) - He's on fire as well. Tied for second at The Hope and is currently 15th on the Tour in scoring, and moving up. Let's ride with him as long as we can.
Mark Calcavecchia (C) - Sure he's old and has a bad back, but he's a three-time winner here and he made the cut at The Hope. If you need another C player, pick up Calc.
Sell
Derek Lamely (B) - Hasn't played all that bad recently, still no reason to start him as a B pick this week in Phoenix.
Andres Romero (B) - Really hasn't done much since 2008. Missed the cut last week at The Farmers shooting 70, 77.
Nick O'Hern (C) O'Hern's game doesn't usually come around until the Summer months. He played awful at both The Hope and The Farmers. There are many more options for C-level players than Nick this week.
Hold
Geoff Ogilvy (A) - Geoff is off to a surprisingly slow start in 2011. He cut his finger before the Sony Open and is now back trying to find his game. Don't play his as an A level player this week, but keep a close eye on his game, he should be a solid performer in a few weeks.
Don't forget to listen to this week's AudioBoo for our "Flyer" of the week.
People talk about me, baby Say I'm doin' you wrong, doin' you wrong Well, don't you worry baby Don't worry Cause I'm right here, right here, right here, right here at home
--- The Joker by Steve Miller Band
Novak Djokovic vs. Andy Murray for all the marbles in Australia.
According to Steve Miller, The Joker was right here at home, well Novak Djokovic is playing so well he must feel at home in Australia.
These two are both 23, both about 6'3" and have been playing each other since they were 12. Murray even divulged that he won their first ever meeting as 12 year olds 6-1, 6-0.
As pros, Novak hold the head to head lead at 4-3, but they haven't played since Key Biscayne in 2009.
This is their first meeting in a Grand Slam event. With his big win over Roger Federer, I don't think Djokovic is going to waste this opportunity. Murray is hungry for Grand Slam success, but this isn't the time.
Look or Djokovic to come out and get an early break and that will propel him to a set win. He's playing too well.
