Kindle Pick of the Week: That's Gotta Hurt by Dr. David Geier

Not a free pick this week, but a great pick for anyone who plays or watches sports.

In That’s Gotta Hurt, the orthopaedist David Geier shows how sports medicine has had a greater impact on the sports we watch and play than any technique or concept in coaching or training. Injuries among professional and college athletes have forced orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare providers to develop new surgeries, treatments, rehabilitation techniques, and prevention strategies. In response to these injuries, sports themselves have radically changed their rules, mandated new equipment, and adopted new procedures to protect their players. Parents now openly question the safety of these sports for their children and look for ways to prevent the injuries they see among the pros. The influence that sports medicine has had in effecting those changes and improving both the performance and the health of the athletes has been remarkable.

Through the stories of a dozen athletes whose injuries and recovery advanced the field (including Joan Benoit, Michael Jordan, Brandi Chastain, and Tommy John), Dr. Geier explains how sports medicine makes sports safer for the pros, amateurs, student-athletes, and weekend warriors alike. That’s Gotta Hurt is a fascinating and important book for all athletes, coaches, and sports fans.

Kindle Pick of the Week: The Amy Binegar-Kimmes-Lyle Book of Failures: A funny memoir of missteps, inadequacies, and faux pas

With a book release party coming on Monday night in the Atlanta area, let's take a look at Amy Lyle's book:

THE AMY BINEGAR-KIMMES-LYLE BOOK OF FAILURES is a humor memoir. If you have ever failed at love, finances, been fired, not fit in, self-diagnosed yourself with disorders and conditions and/or said "I really need to get my s*** together," this is the book for you. Delight in Amy Lyle’s 45 years of missteps, inadequacies and faux pas. You may appreciate your own dysfunction a little more as you take a journey through Amy’s debacles including: “I Was Not Talking to You,” where Amy mistakes a handsome man waving at her as a potential suitor but in reality he was only trying to inform her that her belt was dragging on the freeway and “In the Neighborhood,” where members of a cult moving in concurred with a suspicious decline in the cat population.

There is more than just that.

Books launch info:

The book launch party will be a social media movement (#bookoffailures) and cocktail party, offering wine and cheese and lots of prizes from local businesses, including $100 Home Depot gift cards, free eye brow waxes, vampire facial, and a SculptSure fat reducing treatment. Fellow high-functioning dysfunctionals who aspire to channel their missteps, inadequacies and faux pas into success will be on hand to celebrate.

Ten percent of all book proceeds, including sales at the book launch and all sales total, will be donated to local charity, The Place of Forsyth County, which empowers people through training to become self-sufficient. The event is free for the public, but attendees are asked to bring a health or beauty item donation for The Place of Forsyth County.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: Mastering Excel Macros

Still one of the most used mysteries of Excel.... macros.

Everybody wants to learn them. You're not a programmer though. How is a non technical user going to learn how to program? You do want to use macros to make your work easier but are you really going to sit down with a huge programming textbook and work your way through every. single. boring. page? Like most people, you'll start with great enthusiasm and vigor but after a few chapters, the novelty wears off. It gets boring.

Kindle Free Pick of the Week: Alexander Hamilton

What did Alexander Hamilton ever do besides get shot in a duel by Aaron Burr? When it comes to the American government, the answer is: practically everything.

Born in the West Indies, Hamilton was the illegitimate child of a Scottish nobleman who lost a fortune in sugar plantations. Orphaned as a teenager, he came to America in search of an education, a home, and the war that would at last bring him fame and honor. As George Washington’s most trusted aide, Hamilton helped to win the American Revolution—but after the war, his enemies lost no time accusing him of trying to sell his country back to the British. He was the most powerful member of Washington’s presidential cabinet—so why did Adams and Jefferson hate him so much?
