Betters like US Chances in Olympics

Bettors are enticed by the United States’ odds to win the medal count at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The United States is at +1400 at BetMGM to have the most medals at the Olympics. And those odds have generated nearly 60% of bets to be placed on the U.S. Those bets equal over 65% of the total money bet on the medal count winner.

The United States hasn’t won the most medals at a Winter Olympics since the 2010 Vancouver Games. Canada got the most gold medals that year on home soil, but the U.S. won 37 total medals and beat Germany by seven.

Russia got the most medals in 2014 at home in the Sochi games, though the team’s success was immediately part of a doping investigation. Russia won 30 total medals in 2014, two ahead of the United States and four ahead of Norway. As part of that investigation, Russian athletes are not competing under the Russian flag at Beijing. The Russian Olympic Committee athletes are currently at +800 to win the most medals and are getting just 6.5% of bets.

Germany is also at +800 to win the most medals. The Germans are getting the second-most tickets at 12.9%, but those tickets make up just 7.5% of the handle.

The overwhelming favorite to score the most medals is Norway at -650. The Norwegians are getting 3.2% of bets and 11.5% of the handle at BetMGM after winning the medal count in 2018. Norway and Germany each had 14 gold medals in 2018, though Norway won 39 medals — eight more than Germany and 10 more than Canada. The Canadians are at +1200.

Odds on Olympics

Team U.S.A are the odds-on favorites to take home the most medals in the 2021 Olympics, according to betting industry analysts at USsportsbonus.com (See Disclaimer Below). America holds 1/10 odds to win the most medals (90.9% implied probability), followed by China at 4/1 (20%) and the Russian Olympic Committee at 20/1 (4.8%).

“With the 2021 Tokyo Olympics marking the first summer games with widespread legalized sports betting in the U.S., oddsmakers are anticipating large amounts of activity, while networks are likely to relish in improved television ratings thanks to an increase in public interest as a result of Americans placing bets,” says US Sportsbonus gambling industry analyst Jay Sanin. “Nevada saw a $3 million increase in betting during the summer 2016 compared to 2015, but the sophistication of mobile sports betting since then could see bigger increases in states this summer.”

The strongest American favorites are in men’s and women’s swimming events. Katie Ledecky is the 1/7 favorite to win the 1,500m freestyle (87.5% implied probability) and the 5/16 favorite to win the 800m freestyle (76.2%). For the men, Caeleb Dressel is the 10/55 favorite to win the 100m butterfly (84.6%), and the 10/43 favorite to win the 50m freestyle (81.1%).

American athletes are also primed to win three of the new sports being added in the 2021 Olympics. The U.S.A. Women’s 3x3 basketball team are 11/10 favorites to win gold (47.6% implied probability), followed by France at 5/2 (28.6%). Nyjah Huston is the 1/1 favorite to win the skateboarding street competition (50%). Carissa Moore is the 2/1 favorite to win the individual gold for women’s surfing (33.3%).

American track star Noah Lyles is also the odds-on favorite to win gold in the 200m. His odds are currently 57/100 (63.7% implied probability).

A Third of the Japanese Surveyed Believe The Olympic Games Should Be Cancelled Altogether

A survey in August showed that 33.7% of 1000+ respondents believe that the Tokyo Olympic Games should be cancelled altogether while another 36.4% believe that it should be postponed further.

75.3% of respondents believed that the pandemic would not be contained anytime soon as their reason for their desire to cancel or postpone the Games. 12.7% indicated that they wanted the Japanese government to prioritize fighting the virus more while a further 5.3% pointed to the additional costs to be too high.
