Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - Surviving that Middle Seat or Flight From Hell

It's the holiday season and that not only means "Merry Christmas" and Mistletoe, it means the dreaded holiday travel season and that means delayed and packed flight and everything involved with flying testing your patience.

You might even have to deal with an oversold flight or a middle seat on a 737.

Rick and Sully talk a little travel this week...

What to do if you find yourself in 18B, which is probably a middle seat? Let's take a look and listen...

1. Sleep and that Neck Pillow

Sleeping upright can be a possibility—even in the middle seat. Make sure you have the right neck or travel pillow for your body, whether that's a standard neck pillow, a shoulder-wrapping Travelrest Pillow, or even a jacket that converts into a pillow. Though they may not be as cuddly as their foam-filled counterparts, consider blow-up travel pillows for their space-saving qualities. For more convenience, there are now blow up travel pillows.

2. Noise-Canceling Headphones

Ask any road warrior what to look for in a pair of headphones, and they will say noise-canceling. For just a few hours, a pair of good headphones can be a middle-seat passenger's best friend. The right set tuned to a good movie or music can take your mind off the otherwise muscle-contorting rigors of the middle seat.

Samples: Bose, Beats by Dre BiGR.

3. Airline Apps

Make sure you have the app of the airline you are flying downloaded on your phone or tablet. If you get delayed or if there are weather problems, sometimes you can get info and make changes easier on your app, rather than dealing with a gate agent.

4. The Airhook

Give your airline seat, especially a middle seat a comfort upgrade. The Airhook is a legroom-saving airline travel accessory that holds your beverage and electronic device. Available here for $22.45.

5.  Carbon Monoxide Monitor

* Home Alert makes one for $44

Carbon monoxide detectors are a lot like smoke detectors, but instead of looking for signs of fire, they detect levels of carbon monoxide. Depending on the brand, detectors operate in one of three ways: with a biomimetic sensor, metal oxide semiconductor, or electrochemical sensor.
Biometric sensors use gels that change color after absorbing a certain amount of carbon monoxide. Metal oxide semiconductors have silica chips that send electrical signals to trigger an alarm. Electrochemical sensors are considered to be the best in the industry. They use chemical solutions and electrodes that release currents to sound an alarm.

You'll want to install carbon monoxide detectors like smoke detectors—on every level of your home. For areas with more carbon monoxide producing appliances, like your kitchen, garage, and basement, you should install multiple detectors.

6.  Screentime App

www.screentimelabs.com

The Screen Time app—built for parents by parents and born out of one father’s struggle witnessing his eldest son develop an unhealthy attachment to technology—is designed to help people manage their kids’ screen time to ensure they are enjoying the benefits of tech in balance with offline socialization, activities and adventures.
Yet many parents have not considered what impact the new devices will have on their children’s lifestyle balance. While technology has benefits—from developing language skills to learning enhancements—too much of it can have adverse effects on kids, contributing to behavioral issues, obesity, sleep irregularity and more.
American Academy of Pediatrics Screen Time Recommendations: only video-chatting for children under 18 months; only high-quality programming for toddlers 18-24 months with parental co-viewing; no more than one hour of supervised screen time per day for kids ages 2 to 5; and consistent limits for youth over age 6—and yet many children are logging up to seven hours of screen time per day, including TV, tablets, smart phones, computers and other devices (read more here and here).

Limpert Tech "SullyCast" on Radio 105.7 - Halloween Tech Safety Tips

While Halloween is an exciting time for kids, it can be a nerve-racking time for parents, with safety being their top priority. Gone are the days of turning your children loose in the neighborhood to go door-to-door without a safety plan in place.

Some tech safety tips for Halloween

Have a listen:

1.  Don't Let Kids Go Alone and Carry Flashlights

Children under the age of 12 should never be turned loose to go door-to-door without adult supervision.  It’s always best to go out in groups and stay in the neighborhoods you are most familiar with using the sidewalk and remaining on well lit streets as you navigate the neighborhood.
Kids should carry flashlights with fresh batteries or glow sticks so they are visible to cars and motorcycles.  Include reflector tape on the bottoms of shoes for added protection.

2.  RedPanicButton.com

Are you in distress? Do you feel threatened? Don’t panic!
Just push THE RED PANIC BUTTON!

The app will immediately send an SMS and an E-MAIL containing your GPS coordinates in a Google Maps link to all your emergency contacts! Get out of trouble, find your child or help others with only ONE button push on your phone screensaver!

3.  If You Need to Check Out Your Neighbors

Make sure you know the neighborhood and who lives there. You can do a quick search on BeenVerified.com to see if your new neighbors have any skeletons in their closet.

The most popular times to trick-or-treat are 5:30-9:30pm. There is safety in numbers, so it is best to stick to these times when canvasing the neighborhood.

4.  Be Mindful of Dogs and Carry Dog Treats to Make 4-legged Friends

- Dogs don't like Halloween and Halloween Costumes.

Beware of dogs you don’t know and advise kids not to pet dogs you meet along the trick-or-treat route. Dogs can be nervous around little kids, especially ones dressed like ghouls and goblins. Have someone in your group carry dog treats to make friends.

5.  Dcorate your Kids’ Costumes and Candy Bags with Reflective Tape

One type is

3M Scotchlite Reflective Tape, Silver, 1-Inch by 36-Inch

You should decorate your kids’ costumes and candy bags with reflective tape to make them more visible on the dark streets.
