NFL Week 4: Play of the Week

It's week 4 and I'm still trying to get on the scoreboard.

I think it will happen with Tennessee this week.  The Titans are -7 at home against Denver.  The Titans will cover that 7.  I don't like the total of 44 in this game.

I do like the over in the Bengals/Browns game.  It's 37 in this battle of Ohio.  Take the over!

It's the first week where the byes come into play.  Should be a fun and profitable week.

Michigan State Coach Back to Watch Game

Coach Mark Dantonio of Michigan State will watch Saturday's game against No. 11 Wisconsin from the hospital rather than the coaches' booth at Spartan Stadium after a blood clot was discovered in his leg.

Dantonio, who suffered a mild heart attack Sept. 19 and underwent surgery, had been planning to watch the game from the booth after returning to work Sunday.

The 54-year-old Dantonio watched last week's game against Northern Colorado from home, as offensive coordinator Don Treadwell coached the No. 24 Spartans.

Dantonio attended his weekly news conference Tuesday and said that he'll be easing back into his routine but would follow doctor's orders.  Dantonio last coached in the Spartans wild win over Notre Dame where he called a fake field goal in overtime to shock the Irish.

Whatever happened to... Jerry Glanville?

The coach that used to only wear black is now involved in the blues.

Hosting the blues that is, as in the weekly "Blues Jam" at The Black Diamond Grill in Cumming, GA.

It's been a gradual fall, from NFL Head Coach of the Oliers and Falcons to broadcaster, to NASACR wannabe, and back into football as an assistant in the college ranks at Hawaii and then his final resting place Portland St. where he resigned with a record of 9-24.

Along the way he left tickets at will call for Elvis and blew up just about every NASCAR car or truck he drove.

His current gig is hosting "blues night" in Cumming, GA and I'm tempted to stop by one night and see if the old coach is telling tales from the gridiron, like why he traded Brett Favre.  As a Packer fan, I love Coach Glanville.  The gift he gave the Packers in Brett Favre kept giving and giving.  An now the old coach in black is singing the blues.

Iowa State Releases 2011 Football Schedule

It may be a new conference, but the Big XII just got tougher for the remaining teams from what was once known as the Big XII North.

My team, Iowa State released their 2011 schedule today and with 9 conference games now it is tough.  At least we don't have to play Oklahoma and Texas on the road every other year.

Texas is played early on, and Oklahoma is played in November.  Maybe we can have some nice cold and windy November weather to welcome the Sooners to Ames.  It has also been known to snow that time of the year.

I for one am looking forward to the new Big XII, if that is what they are going to continue to call it.

Here's the schedule:

Sept. 3 - Northern Iowa
Sept. 10 – Iowa
Sept. 17 -@ UCONN
Oct. 1 - Texas
Oct. 8 - @ Baylor
Oct. 15 – @ Missouri
Oct. 22 - Texas A&M (Homecoming)
Oct. 29 - @ Texas Tech
Nov. 5 – Kansas
Nov. 12 - @ Oklahoma
Nov. 19 – Oklahoma State
Nov. 26 - @ Kansas State

Big College Game of the Week: Florida at Alabama

A SEC Championship Game preview? Maybe.

A pair of college football heavyweights collide in Tuscaloosa this weekend, as top-ranked Alabama plays host to seventh-ranked Florida at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

There is no rest for the weary in the SEC and the defending national champs know that better than anyone. Nick Saban's Crimson Tide opened SEC play last week on the road and were given all they could handle from nationally-ranked Arkansas, before posting a 24-20 victory to move to 4-0 on the year. It marked the 28th straight regular season win for Alabama, which also puts a 16-game win streak at home on the line in this one.

Meyer's team is no stranger to lengthy win streaks, as the Gators have won 24 straight regular-season affairs, including 13 consecutive on the road. Florida (4-0) made light work of Kentucky last weekend (48-14) to move to 2-0 in conference play.

Alabama holds a 21-14 edge in the all-time series with Florida, but just a 6-5 advantage in Tuscaloosa. These two teams have met in each of the last two SEC Championship Games, with the winner going on to capture the national title (Florida in 2008 and Alabama in 2009).

The Gators are coming off their highest scoring output of the season, ringing up 48 points on Kentucky. A lot of that came from freshman Trey Burton, who had five carries for 40 yards and five touchdowns, while adding a sixth score on five receptions. With the effort, Burton set the school-record for TDs in a single game.

I like the Tide in this one as they play their best in the most important games, but never count out the Gators.
